AIR intakes, so confusing.

Hey fellow Maximillions. I have a total stock air filter box with a k&n filter. I want to upgrade to something. I've read all about pop chargers, short ram, CAI, and some custom ones where theres a tubing taken to the front. I want to know whats the best thing to do. My motives are purely for performance reasons, and I live in TX so its relatively hot. i also love *****

I try and answer the first question as others have already talked about others questions brought up. . .

Anyway, it is purely up to you which one to choose, I will go over the benefits though and maybe that will help:

Pop Charger: Very good gains in the top end, if you ever reach it. Some claim that this is best for 5-speeds and that it doesn't work as well for autos as 5-speeds can be put in whatever range they want basically.

CAI: Gives very good low-mid range gains, but top end suffers. I switched from a pop charger to CAI and the loss in the top end was very dramatic, and I didn't like it, but the low-mid range went up very noticeably. Only drawback is you have to cut into the car. That is why I went with the next option the hybrid.

Hybrid: Depends on how you look at it it could be either the top part of the CAI with the stock filter that comes with the CAI or the top part of the CAI with a cone filter. This I feel gave me the best overall gain throughout the rev range, but other think it isn't much better than a CAI because it still takes in hot air. The benefit of this one is you don't have to cut into your car though.

Ram Air: People have now started making custom pipes that forces cold air to the front of the filter so it takes in cool air. This prevents the problem with the CAI in that 4th gen intake runners (I think) are too long and the car bogs at high RPMs.

I am sure there are all sorts of vaiations, but maybe this will help you make a decision. . . It all depends on where you want the gains to be seen most. Each is best for certain applications, and you need to determine what is best for you.

Thanks for the help guys. That was my first post, Maxima.org rocks, and I'm so glad that there are people willing to help me out. Thanks!

LOL I was RIGHT!! (almost)

Yeah, advice-wise Adidas_Boy pretty much said it all. Popchargers are cheapest, even cheaper if you make one yourself with an adapter, and WSP CAI is the best CAI buy for the price. More people complain about the loss of low-end power with the pop than any high-end loss (debatable) with a CAI. 5-speed cars are more forgiving apparently, but some say they experience little/no popcharger loss so search, read, and judge for yourself.

DA MAX- Chevy is planning to bring the Holden Commodore either this gen or the next gen one over to be an Impala SS thats what I heard from Motortrend
dont you love the 400hp Callaway tuned V-8 available?

oh yea... I have a full CAI and the low and mid range gains are great but I have noticed the car gets weak at the high rpms... so I plan to get the variable intake manifold to offset this

I know, I know I heard last week I think it'll be the 2003 SS ...I hope they don't change it from the Holden/HSV body style either I love the look, although the interior isn't the greatest!(good ole American cars ) but the performance is awesome, according to Car and Driver, in a showdown with the M5, it lost only by a few in the various categories and had the M5 on its toes at all times. but ****, when you get compared to the M5 at all you know the car has some *****! I even hear there is a version out there with the Z06 engine and Autospeed actually has one SC'd!! man I can't wait, its about time GM woke up and brings back some REAL muscle cars for the millineum....

dude I've been waiting years for them to bring it over... its on the same platform as the Caddy Catera and the next one is supposed to be based off of GMs SIGMA platform- Holdens are some kick *** cars

I saw them in Australia... dayum hehe fun awesome looking cars

but with GMs luck they'll probably screw up the styling
