maxima buying advice requested

As a near-retirement "older guy", I am looking for a practical but entertaining low-cost used ride. A while back, I came into an early 90s Pathfinder, and have been astonished to find how utterly reliable it is, with a very impressive, rugged and smooth V6. Since I married (very) late in life and have two elementary school kids, my requirements have been for factors like reliability, economy, etc. But my memories of my earlier, pre-fatherhood life persist, which entail ownership of 911 Porsches, Alfa four-bangers, Corvettes, and even a stretch driving a Cosworth-engined Formula Ford open-wheeled racer at one point while seeking my competition driving license. I'm looking to find something used for under $10K that is reliable and innocuous-appearing, yet can corner and accelerate pleasurably, and perhaps even be susceptible to some easy bolt-on power, handling and braking enhancements. My Pathfinder has inspired me to research Nissan a bit further, and my early observations indicate that Maxima might be my perfect "sleeper" vehicle (and I'm especially taken by the handsome, but conservative, styling of the early 90s numbers). This 60+ year old would appreciate any tips as to pitfalls, weak spots, stuff to watch out for, what kind of work do they need after "x" miles, what tires are recommended for stock or near-stock suspensions, etc. when looking for, say, vehicles of the 92 - 94 SE, 5-speed ilk. I really am looking for a successor to my old Alfa Berlina which was wonderfully smooth and silky, loved to cruise at 80 - 100 (although it took it while to get there), had respectable brakes, yet had a decent ride and overall ability to bring a smile to your face (but we won't mention its reliability issues or penchant for swallowing oil, etc.). What should I be looking for? Thanks in advance, and I apologize for such a wordy post!

you can definitely get a car as new as a 98 for under $10,000. although it seems that you like the 3rd generations more then the 4th gens. try going to the specific 4th Gen and 3rd Gen forums to ask about specifics on the cars. people will let you know how they like their car, how its been holding up, and any regrets they may have,

2 days later: i realized i messed up on the third gen forum link. it should be right now.
