The Maximas last hope.....

The Maximas last hope.....
My car has been in the shop since last week, in hopes that something would turn up. Last week while accelerating on an on ramp it cut out completely in the upper rpms, in second gear. I coasted a ways then it started to go again. Scary moment.
They have done a leak down test, re-checked every sensor & the computer. This afternoon they are putting it back on the dyno and checking the fuel pressure to see if they can spot anything.
I haven't been driving this car in so long I've given today as the deadline. If the problem doesn't surface today I will sell it tomorrow.
I've just about had it with this car, its becoming a money sucking pit.

I feel your frustration man. My car has presented its fair share of problems and I'd like to pitch it too, except since the depreciation is so bad, I cannot afford to. I'm actually considering a WRX now. Seems like almost the perfect car, except I wont be able to do burnouts with it.. .hahaha.

Good luck w/ the WRX. Nice car. But the tranny still suffers from an input shaft diameter that a little too small for any good power increases. Many I-club members are having troubles when they up the power or drive hard. Considering how you treat your maxima tranny, I would look into this before buying one.

Have them check you catalyc converter. When mine went, if would make the car cut off as well. I had tons of checks done too, by several dealers and small shops. But nothing turned up, finally a 76 gas station found the problem.

I can't believe you never took out the ECU to see if this was the problem. ECUs are funny in that they can give normal readings on the machine, but go crazy while driving. I would have changed to OEM NGKS plugs ( A MUST ) and borrowed the coil packs and ECU from a same year local Maxima. I'm almost certain your problem is right there. Mechancially, it sounds like your car is fine. I don't remember ever reading of a "worn out" NA VQ. However electrical problems (bad coil packs, ECU, cam sensor, O2 sensor, knock sensor, etc) are prone to wearing out or failing over time. Your car clearly sounds like its has a electrical problem since it's cutting out, pinging, etc. Good luck, but I still don't think you explored ALL avenues on this.

Re: The Maximas last hope.....
I had a similair problem not to long ago. When my gas gauge read 1/4 quarter tank or less when ever I would acclerate past 3500 rpms the engine would cut out until I went down below 3k rpms. It turned out I had a bad fuel sender unit. It took forever to diagnose the problem but that was it.

I'm on my 4th sender, but it simply tells the gauge how much fuel is in the tank. A faulty one would not cause your car to stall.

With the engine cutting out like that I took it immediately to the dealership. Without filling the tank again there was no way for me to make the correlation that the fuel gauge was incorrect.
