2002 Stang GT 5spd vs. 1995 Maxima 5spd SE
My neighbor just got a brand new Mustang GT convertable 5-speed manual.
I am going to convert to 5speed sometime in april, and would like to know my chances against him.
I have a WSP Y, Cattman CAI, 2.5" b (no resonator), flowmaster duals, 17x8 wheels...and when I get my 5spd I'm gonna put in a STS.
What are my chances in straight line acceleration up to say 60 or 70? He is completely stock.

Motor Trend claimed 5.4 0-60 and 14 flat in the quarter mile...those numbers don't really make sense for a car that is 260HP + 3300 pounds, do they?
But then again it has like 300pound feet of torque...but I heard American cars generally have weaker engineering so the power to the wheels has a greater loss than on some imports. Also his RWD losses more power than my FWD...

Look in any Hot Rod where they've dynoed a 4.6L 'Stang, they only have about a 15% driveline loss. Remember, driveline loss is about how well the drivetrain is engineered. Tremec made the transmission, the driveshaft takes a few, but it's still only 15% or so. A FWD only has less driveline loss due to the driveshaft and axlehousing, assuming similar engineering in the drivetrain. But this is Nissan, not the best for trannies, we all know the WONDERFUL job they did with their autotragics. The race will be close, but the Mustang has a LOT more power. 302lb-ft peak torque, at 4600RPM, around 250lb-ft at the hp peak. The Max doesn't have nearly the torque curve. It'll be a good race since it's a convertible, but he'll take you.

You are going to get beat on. Depending on how well you can drive (and the same with him) it might not be that bad, but he has the faster car. They run low 14s with a decent driver and high 13s with a really awesome one.

You will probably loose simply because you won't be use to the 5 speed and you're 17s will slow you down somewhat. A 5 speed convertible is a mid 14-second car on average. I raced a 01 GT coupe (drag radials, exhaust) a few weekends ago. He ran a 14.3@99mph to my 14.6@98mph. I was pretty amazed he didn't pull on me at all after the first 100'. He stayed 2 cars ahead the whole way down the 1/4 mile. BTW, he was ****ed when he found out I was just a V6 grocery getter. He did end up running a 14.0@100mph.

Well he just seems like a hotshot with a "stang ownz all" attitude and I would REALLY like to surprise him.
But I'm sayin' after I got used to the 5-speed, several months...he'd be the type of guy who'd smoke the tires off the line to show his "power" so i'd probubly get him there.
Dave, my 17's only weigh 19.9 pounds each, 39-42lbs. with tires (can't remember exactly)...I am sure those GT alloy's arent the lightest things.
I was gonna PM you Dave, but I'll ask here. If you have a 19 pound 17 inch rim and a 19 pound 18 inch rim, would the advantage go to the 17? I thought so becuase of rotational mass not only weight but some members here don't seem to think so.
Also you mentioned I would probubly lose do to my rims...do the rims REALLY make that much of a difference?? I know I couldn't feel the slightest lag after I switched from the stock 15" alloys to my 17s..

personally, i think he would have you for lunch.
just an opinion, though. i raced my friends 00 GT auto in my sho. he trounces me, and i do know how to drive. stock for stock, shos and maximas are close, i think. never raced one, though.

The first week I had my Max I stayed even with an older pre-99 GT on a local highway
But yeah, the 99+ GT's are a lot quicker. However, more than a few Mustang drivers think they're the shiznits and can't drive worth a crap. Who knows, you might be able to take him, or at least stay within a car of him and **** him off that a grocery getter was able to keep up. Just run him and find out!

If your rims weigh 19.9lbs, I'm almost certain your 17" tires weigh 23-26 lbs. Low profile tires are heavy because they have more steel belts and muc hthicker sidewalls. You're looking at a 43-46lb combo at the least. Does adding 6lbs to unsprung weight make that much of a difference? I think it does. I use to run 46lbs 17s. The best I ever ran on the 17s was a 15.0@92mph with a 2.25 60'. The I got light 16s (38lbs combo) and I ran a 14.7@94mph with a 2.26 60' with the same mods and under similiar conditions.
With equal weights, a 17" rim will be better than the 18" performance wise because more of the weight is centered around the hub instead of the outside of the rim (less rotationial inertia).

Your gonna get smoked. I test drove a 02' GT 5 speed 2 days ago and that thing moved pretty well. If the driver can drive it well, you will need to have NOS or a S/C to beat it from a standstill. From a roll things could be different.

You are toast just waiting to pop out. "American weak engineering" equates to rattles and squeeks, but in the HP and torque department, Nissans don't have a chance. I'm not trying to ensight a flame war here, I'm just telling it like it is. I've owed 3 Maximas, and over 20 F-bodys. My 2000 SS will toast a Mustang all day, but the I wouldn't try one with my 00 Max. Go test drive a Mustang at a dealership. That will give you a feel for the car. I went to drive a 2002 Max, and was not impressed. The tranny is still a slip-o-matic. I just can't understand what they did to it in 2000. My 99 Max was a solid shifter. The 02's 255HP isn't supported by the torque, and comes on at highway speed. I'm holding out for the 03s..........

Do you realize we're talking about a modded 5-speed maxima here..NOT a stock 2000-2001auto...which has proved to be one of the slowest maximas EVER...probably becuase of the tranny.

My 99GLE felt faster than the 2000, and the 2002 felt stronger than the 2000 in the top end. OK, so it dynos at more than the 246 advertised. Buy how much? 10-15.flbs? Whoopee.

There are MANY reasons why I don't need or want an old Z28 to beat on Stangs. First of all...I need a reliable car with good build quality...not some 100,000 mile f-body that eats gas and oil like crazy. Second of all...when it snows in the winter here in chicago, I wouldn't be caught dead driving a RWD pony car. Third of all...I can beat up on 90% of all the Stangs in my area with my MAXIMA....when you pull up next to a stock stang in a Z28...they KNOW they are going to get whopped...and it's no fun...but when you pull up next to one in a family car...they think they will beat your pants off....and when they lose it's all worth it just to see the look on their face. In fact...I can beat up on stock LS-1s with my maxima as it is now...and that's even more fun....
BTW-The 1/4 mile time in my sig is from last year...my car is a good bit quicker now...plus I get almost 30mpg on the highway..and 21-22 mpg in the city...and I've put less than 2 grand in go fast mods into my car....there's my justification.

I only stated what cars I can beat with my modded max...I didn't even name a single car that runs faster than low 13s in the 1/4. Is it so hard to believe that a car that is capable of runing 14.7 STOCK can run in the 13s pretty easily with juice??
If you think maxima.org is like a civic board.....get a clue.....and just take a look around....do you see one Ferrari kill??? Hell...do you see any Vette kills????
