Fuel filter worth doing!

I've had a stumble accelerating at low revs the past few months. I noticed it when I put the aluminum flywheel on. Well, tonight I replaced my fuel filter and the stumble is gone!

Couple of things ... first, this job reminds me why I hate working on cars. It's a 1 minute job that took me 30 minutes because of the dumb location (and I hear some folks take an hour!). Second, when I took off the old unit, I tried blowing through it to see how blocked up it was. I couldn't get ANY air through. The new filter (Amsoil) you could use as a snorkel My car has 118k on it, and I haven't changed this since I got it at 60k. I figure that's a ballpark for how long to go. I bet this is why my mileage has been dropping too. I'll find out tomorrow.

One last thing ... 3:30am, no busy server message!!!

It took me 2 hours to do mine . . . .
I have ABS, it get's in the way.
This may be too late for you, but next time, consider using the 300ZX filter. The original filter is really only good for 30K miles, with the 300ZX one, it's twice the size, you can go 60K miles. That's what I'm running now. The longer I can leave it, the better I feel

Sprint and I never could figure out if one would fit. It fits in my non-ABS '99. Are we to assume it can fit in the ABS equipped 4th gens as well?

Do you have a part # for the 300ZX fuel filter?

Thanks

Actually, more realistic filter life is 15k and 30k, respectively. Also, if you live in an area with oxygenated gas, it's probably just wise to replace it yearly at around this time when the temps warm up and gas returns to "normal".

Not to sound dumb and ig'nat. But what about the 5th gen? Apparently it is incorporated into the fuel cell. Since the logic is 15 - 30 then does that mean I am *ahem* and have to pay over 200 smackers to have it changed?

At least on the 4th gen its on the outside and CAN be changed. {sigh} I hope I am just misinformed about the 5th gen.

Hmmmm....I thought it was a can, but am ignorant in reality. Perhaps Kev can clarify this about the fuel filter....

Yup. It only just fits inside the spring loaded clip, but works. The difference between ABS and non ABS equipped Maximas is the area in front of the brake master cylinder. The ABS equipped cars have sevral small steel hydraulic lines in that area, just the area you need when you're working on the feul filter, but not the actual area around the feul filter itself.

5th gen fuel filter is in the tank and is supposedly maintenance free.

If you ever need one, it's fairly cheap:

Fuel Filter (located in gas tank)
16400-2Y921
All 00-01 models probably never (due to its location, not considered a replacement part)
$16.30
» Add One(1) To Basket (if you ever need one)

Check with Dave Burnette at 800-251-7278 if you want a better price.

Have you ever changed one? Was it labor intensive? I 'ASSSUMED' that since it was inside, it was not easy to get to and that is why the labor charge was so high? Or was it a case of "I don't want to do it so Ill price high and he will go away."?

I always replaced on all my cars because, hey its a filter and filters eventually stop filtering due to contaminants. It just concerns me on the 5th gen.... thoughts?

I haven't changed mine yet, but I'll probably do so when I get close to 60K (along with a Walboro fuel pump).

I have my doubts about the "maintenance free fuel filter" like you do.

Like the dealer told that guy (in a recent thread): They spent $xxmillions of dollars to design the Maxima - IT CAN'T BE IMPROVED!

Maintenance free = crock of ****

I'm sure in reality it was cheaper for them to do it this way.....

It was probably designed to last 60k and once the powertrain warranty expires, then what does Nissan care?
