Look what I found! Cheap LSD conversion!?

Check it out..

http://www.phantomgrip.com

Could it be? sounds simple enough. I'm going to give them a call today and see what's up with their product. What do you guys think? The price is unbelievable...my only concern is response and torque capability. Wonder if it would cause undue stress on the tranny/driveshafts. The testimonials seem pretty positive, race proven and lifetime warrantee. They already have an application for 98-2001 maximas.. I am going to check this out further. Please comment intelligently.

thanks

What Price? They don't give one, except for the spring kit.

C'mon bill, sometimes it's ok to revive an old topic. Sometimes new information comes up, or people have new experiences or opinions. Under the search I got a bunch of 3 post threads with limited or no information. It's not as if I am asking WHAT an LSD is, or how to clear my tailights. It hasn't been brought up that often and i'd like to see some fresh opinions.

Jime: lists for $299 for most applications including the maxima.

Good lookin out man. I didn't catch it the first time. I'm glad you at least let us know that you found something for Max's. It's hard to find parts at that price.

I know a lot of Honda guys hate them because it's really hard on your factory diff. It's not a true LSD, just a clutch pack you insert, hence the price.

This should work and no, it shouldn't hurt your driveline or trani any more than, say, a Quaife. I don't think the disk type LSD is as good as a gear biasing unit, but at $299 (yes, the prices are listed) it's about $1100 cheaper, and probably worth doing. They list them for '98+ Maximas only, which brings up these questions: Manual, auto, or both? If manual, why not pre-98, and if 98+, does this mean both late 4th generation and 5th generation? I think they need to specify the fit better. They do say they can do custom fitment, so I guess anything is possible, but that would entail sending them more than just a check.

Maybe they are in a position with local dealerships where they rent the cars from them for fitment tests. That way somone calls it in saying they want it on a 1999 Max 5 speed and they see where they can fidn one. Just an idea.

If you are NA w/basic bolt ons this will work fine. If you are boosted, juiced or NA BPU++++++++ the Quaife is what you need. At least this is what a local shop that deals Phanton Grip told me.

right back at you for a lame excuse when your initial topic demonstrated a complete ignorance of the product without stipulating what you had found out already and then constructing a more appropriate post that said "This has been the stance on the dot org based upon the research I did: BLAH BLAH BLAH. Has this stance changed?"

Instead, you forced MardiGrasMax to REPEAT himself in the post above and nothing new came out of his comments, which has wasted several members' time and effort.

We expect you to be more considerate of others' efforts by doing an ounce of research. It took about 30 seconds for me to do it and I know nothing about Phantom Grip or their products at my initial post. Within 5 minutes, I knew enough not to consider this purchase and think it's anywhere near the capabilities of a Quaife LSD.

A lot of the Honda guys have tried it but either it didn't work as well as advertised or it caused damage to their differentials. All it is a piece of metal that puts stress on the spider gears to keep them moving together. Its hardly better than welding the spider gears together for a locked differential.

Considering the amount of work involved in removing the diff, I'd stick w/ a real LSD considering the hassle of removing it again if it destroys the factory diff.

I'm sure we'll all survive bill.

MardiGrasMax I'm sure didn't mind TOO much. Besides, a few members who did not know of this option are now considering it, and now a viable discussion is afoot. I think it all turned out for the best. I will be sure to qualify my future posts with,
"I have already searched on this, please don't flame me or tell me to use search, I just want some new opinions. BTW I am not a newbie."

Also, after some research through google, I've read many positive comments and experiences regarding this products from various forums. The sentra guys seem to like it a lot, as do the saturn, hyundai, and suzuki swift guys. In all the previous posts on this topic, not one maxima owner has ever installed this product and had experience with it. So as for me, the verdict is far from settled till we get more info.

I agree. I didn't know about this and I'm sure many other members who've seen this post didn't know about this or perhaps had not considered it. I'm glad it was brought up and don't appreciate someone else, moderator or not, speaking on my and other members' behalf.

Suggestion for Bill: It may be a good idea to preface your comments with something like "moderator voice" or "member voice". You're certainly entitled to your opinion as a member, but at times you use your moderator status to impose your "member" opinion. This is not, at all, good moderating.
