Warpspeed upper CAI installed with work

I finally got my Warpspeed upper CAI today. It's a nicely made piece of work, blows away the POS Weapon R piece I got and never used for quality. The welds look solid and it's powdercoated. However ... there are a couple of things that required some work. First, I saw the hose fittings, but WTF was that big hole in the bottom? I finally realized it was for the intake temperature sender, but I thought it odd to put it behind the MAF and so close to the intake, when stock has it before the air filter. That was easy to figure out, but there is something I think could be improved. The WS upper CAI is about 1-1/2" longer than the resonator it replaces. This takes up valuable space. I had to cut mine down to get it to fit with the OSCAI, and if I had the K&N filter on, I don't think it would work, or even more tightly. The hose fittings on the unit are closer to the MAF than to the throttle body, so there was only so much I could cut from the straight end (the throttle body end is tapered and angle cut, though I did have to grind away a bit there too). If the fittings were slightly further downstream, it would be easier to modify the unit to fit with a filter. I'm sure that with a complete CAI installation, this wouldn't be a problem, but since some of us only buy the upper part, it would be nice if the unit matched the stock length a bit more closely so it wouldn't be necessary to do this kind of fitment.

Good info. I am waiting for mine to come in over the next few days. What color did you get?

I just got black, since I'm not doing any fancy dressing up of my car, so I wanted it to look more stock. Thank goodness I have some shop tools. I used a bandsaw to cut the unit, but with the hose fittings I had to use some wood blocks to keep it in place. Good metal, not the cheap cr@p Weapon R used. I also did some grinding after the initial 1" cut. I have a Scotchbrite disk on one side of my grinding wheel, which is great for deburring the edges.

I went with the red and hope to maybe get red hosing to go with it. I figure it will look pretty good with it and was another reason why I opted for the warpspeed upper half.

Just a WEE bit early to ask, since I drove up the street and back, then went back to work. The car sounds the same, though my buttometer tells me it's quicker now. I should have g-teched before and after, but I just got the g-tech a few days ago and haven't played with it yet. Also, this is only the upper CAI, not the whole thing. I don't care to drill a hole in my fender, so I'm one of those who made an OSCAI. I just got this to (maybe) smooth intake airflow.

Re: Warpspeed upper CAI installed with work

"I have made up some new ones now just for the upper demand, shorter and the hoses are positioned better." I ordered my part about a month ago, got it today and did the mods to install it. Oh great. NOW they tell me! At least some of you will have an easier time.

I still like the quality of the work, and darned if it doesn't make the car seem quicker. A legend in my own mind

The stock resonator throughput is about 4-1/2 inches. The Warpspeed I got was about 6" (approximate length on inside of curve). According to Dallas, they are making upper CAIs closer to the stock dimensions now. Having got mine yesterday, I wish I'd known that and swapped for one, but it works fine for the moment. I can see problems (more cutting) down the road if I swap back in the K+N filter.

Hey how did you remove the piece of stock intake where the hoses go? I took it all out but cannot seperate it from other end where my cone is attached. Do you just pull hard on the two half to get the piece with the cone and the electrical plug apart frmo the side with the accordian thing.

The MAF is connected to the resonator by just a rubber grommet (ring) on the lip of the resonator, and the o-ring clamp. Undo the clamp all the way loose, then pull and wiggle. It's kinda stuck, but it comes apart. Remove the hoses first so you have less restraints. Sounds like Dallas has new upper CAIs for those just putting in that part. He's offered to exchange mine for the better fitting part. Very cool! If yours is like mine, you might want to get in touch with Warpspeed ...

Yep. The stock hoses looked a bit short, so I went to an auto shop. The 3 hose fittings are different sizes. All I could get was 3/4" heater hose, as they were out of large size smog hose (you won't pass visual smog with the wrong hose if they notice). The largest fitting on the CAI is 7/8". I sprayed some lubricant on the fitting to force the hose on. Soap should work too. The clamps on the smaller of the two hoses, the engine breather tube, wouldn't fit on the CAI end of the 3/4" hose, but was snug without it. That was the only hose I could get to slide all the way up. I did get one clamp on the engine end of that hose to fit. The stock clamps on the bigger hose fit the new hose fine.

Well I havent taken a look at this since the other day due to traveling down south for a few days and now bad weather but I was unable to fit the hoses ( stock ones) over the inlets on the CAI upper half. They looked to be a tiny bit smaller then the fittings so I was curious if there were any fitment issues. Oh well I will have to look again once the weather is nice.
