What is the degrees of the cams in 4rth gen? I dont know a hole lot about them, just that my friend put some in his GTI and the car hauls major azz now, lots more top end. I just dont know what duration or anything. My friend told me of a place that will grind or regrind to any spec you want.

generally higher lift, higher duration cams increase topend power, with a compromise in the bottom end.
I asked about cams at JWT when I went to pickup my popcharger (as I want em too ) They said they do all their product development during the winter, so it wouldn't be until Jan or Feb that they would have cams, and to call back then They again this is what they said last year....

SAME OLD **** FROM JWT!!!

Cams for the VQ would wake up the motor!!! It needs the power up top. Its got plenty of low end as it is. For street racing though the low end counts more. For 1/4 mile the cams would help some for those autocross guys it would be a major help!

I had regrinds on my VW from WEB cam, they do VW's too. They had 40k on them when I got rid of the car, so if they are reground correctly they will last a while.

It would also be great if we could get cam gears in one form or another, and retard the cams a couple of degrees.

I think you friend used Shrick cams? If so, they are high quality and ground from a billet(German I think). You can have cams re-ground but it's tricky stuff and the way they get more lift, is to grind the basecircle down and then use shims to make up the difference.

ISKY has been regrinding cams for the VG30E/T's for years. You either send them your cams or some new billets to get reground. They offer several types of grinds and even though I had a mild cam installed in my car I was happy with performance. I should also point out that with an agressive cam some kind of tuning has to be done. If anyone has a FSM I would like to compare the valve timing to that of the VG30DE. It would be in the S.D.S section of the Engine Mechanical chapter. It should show something like this . Here is a dyno of a VG30DE at stage III (intake, exhaust,ECU) . Here is Jeff K's max with the same mods . As you can see the VG30DE has alot more torque from 5500-7000rpm. However IMHO cams alone won't gain you much more than 16fwhp, unless a sacrifice in lowend torque isn't wanted. The 5th gen intake manifold will however boost 4500-7000rpm torque more than cams could. The question is whether or not the intake manifold gasket are the same, if not then they won't swap over. Since the VQ30DE has mild cams given the proper grind, with more bias toward toppend power. One could realisticly see a 15fwhp+ gain. After all the JWT S3 cams in a OBD-II SR20DE makes over 20fwhp!
