Former Gm Man Now Converted !!

Hello all,I'm new here. By the way I'm a former Chevy man.
Now I see the light. Anyway I'm in the process of buying a
95 Maxima fully loaded except leather. The car has 80 000 km
and is in great shape. Asking price is 10 000$ canadian.
That's about 6300$ american. Is it a good deal? What type of
problems should I look for? I know my way around a car, remember
I'm a former GM man so I spent many hours under the hood!
What type of mods/improvements should I consider?

Many thanks to you all.

The usual check of engine oil, tranny oil, body panels, suspension components, tires, interior "smell", engine performance, transmission performance, check the trunk for water or repaired damage, car has been well maintained ? etc.

fairly "old" car you're planning to get, check VIN # w/ carfax to make sure no mileage roll back.

Mods and improvements. Get the car first and then use the SEARCH function.

Basic bolt ons of air filter system, underdrive pulley, exhaust and Y-Pipe, suspension and wheels.

Beyond bolt ons, forced induction, ECU, body kits, N2O.

-Welcome aboard, Maxima.org

Re: Former Gm Man Now Converted !!

Welcome to the board. Happy to hear you're converted over to the good side, or dark side....whichever.

Sounds like you're getting a good deal for the mileage.

Make sure you start off using the search tool for general inquiries if you wanna avoid getting flamed(this board is the worse for that )

A good way to start off is with Intake + Ypipe, best combo bang-for-buck available for the Maxima.

Hi welcome!

I used to be a former GM owner too. I had a '88 Chevy Celebrity and a '95 Pontiac Grand Am GT. I'm glad that I switched over.

Thanks guys

So if I understand you correctly the Maxima
does not have paticular problems? Sensors? wiring?
Motor? Tranny? Any recalls from the Nissan?
Thanks again.

welcome! I'm sure you'll like your maxima; they're really nice cars, overall. You got a good year too. My mom has a fully loaded 96 SE! Anyway, there are one or two haters on the board, but unless you're looking for $$$$$ German type cars, the Max is pretty much the top car in luxury, speed, and comfort compared to its competitors.

I haven't had any problems and I've had my 97 auto for 2 years now. It's been to a lot of meets, to NYC every other month (I live in MA) been to Oklahoma and Georgia. bought it with 43000 and I now have 93000 and its still solid as a rock.

Knock sensors tend to go bad on 95 96 Maximas.
Fuel filters get dirty too easily, so watch mileage and performance, and use NISSAN OE Filters.
Coolant temp sensor tends to go bad on 96 maximas.
Oil Pressure Switch near oil filter tends to fail and leak.
Check cooling system especially the radiator neck, and look for any corrossion along frames, especially after front wheels and bumper after rear wheels.

I'd also like to add from my above post about the importance of BRAKES. When checking ATF if its fresh, ask if the transmission filter was replaced, and if it wasn't let them change it. You can check by seeing if any of the 10mm bolts holding up the pan have been removed, and red silicone gasket material is seeping out a bit. Happens no matter how careful you are.

-Enjoy the Ride.

...sounds like a pretty sweet deal to me.

I bought a 95SE 5speed with 130,00km last August for $11,500CDN - but I did get leather.

Aside from making sure you add some injector cleaner to your gas tank once in a while (the injectors on the Maxima are notoriously expensive to clean once they're dirty) and changing the transmission oil (5speed or auto) every year or two, there's nothing to really worry about.

As for mods and other things to look out for, check out the 4th gen forum(FAQ's, especially) and the Canada regional foum at this website.

It'd be interesting to find out what are the bigest differences you've noticed between your Maxima and the Generous Motors motors vehicles that you've been used to driving.

Let's not forget cars like the V8 mustang's('specially cobra's) and camaro's, Firebirds, Vipers, Vettes, Lightnings, Dodge SRT/10's, ect. which are all some of the sweetest cars in existence IMHO.

You ever pull the consumer reports reliablity ratings on some of the cars you just mentioned? Black dot city! I can't believe how bad some of the American sports cars are put together.

Yea man I have that book...Did you know that for '95-96 the Maxima's got WORSE crash test results than a camaro!

I'm sure your familier with the new SOHC and DOHC 99+ stangs...MUCH better than the old junk. And Vipers and Lightnings....Mmmmmmmm.....and camaro's are just classic muscle.

And the Vette is a world premier sports car...outhandles or is equal to 99% of cars in the world.

I'm dissapointed in you Jeff

Ah, I know all the cars you mentioned are FAST. But expecially the camaro, those things are horrible in reliability. There is no way in hell, I would spend that much cash on a NEW car that has THAT many SOLID BLACK DOTS.

For the maxima, I know it did poor in the crash test, good thing I have a 3-gen

I can appreciate classic muscle cars but that's no excuse for me to spend money on car w/ such poor quality ratings. BTW classic muscle cars were not built that great either.

welcome to the forums...

well, lets see...80,000km is 50,000miles..and a fully loaded Maxima with a such low mileage for $6300? that's a great deal!(if the car is accident free)...

there are alot of aftermarket products you can buy for your car.
Stillen, cattman, Jim Wolf, Frankencar, Berk tuning, Placeracing, etc..
they all make performance and stylistic parts for your car.
the first thing you should do(if you are very performance biased) is to get a Y-pipe. this is the single most biggest hp gain you can get from a bolt-on pipe. Stillen and cattman sell these y-pipes. but i think you should get the cattman ones since these are made out of stainless steel.(since you live in Canada).

but anywayz..good luck!

Consumer reports is my bible for the reliability factor of a car.
I look at the car mags for the fun factor.

The Maxima wins both
