Purolator makes some of the best filters out there. Fram makes junk...ever since they were bought by Allied Signal.
Now I use the Nissan OE filter. I can't justify using synthetic...I change my oil so frequently that I still end up saving money by using natural fossil oil.

They are NOT all the same. That's like saying all oil's the same. For one thing OEM filters have anti drain back... meaning your engine will get oil faster during startup... which happens to be when most wear occur. Cheap ones don't have them. There's a VERY good oil filter test out there...
Jeff, where's that oil filter test link?

Just use the factory OEM filter and you won't run into any problems.
This way your dealer will not give you HELL from finding out that you used cheap or other brand filters on your Maxima during warranty period. If the Nissan filter failed on your car then you have a good case against Nissan. Just my $.02 cents from my friends (dealer mechanics).

about the drain that the nissan OEM filter has built in that the others don't. If you guys do a search there was some stuff on this topic and there was a link on oil filters done by someone. I read this a few weeks ago on one of the posts. And it seems that the mobil 1 filters also has the drain also--but is a fairly expensive filter (money wise).
just order a half dozen from Courtesy for $4 a piece and it can last you a few years (that is if you drive like me--then 2 oil change a year).
heheh

i bookmarked the site, it is http://members.nbci.com/minimopar/oilfilterstudy.html
but it won't work, just says that it is not available. However, lotsa filters have the antidrain valve. Generally speaking, if it is made for a car that is supposed to have one, then it will have one, pretty much no matter what brand. Even the fram has one. The problem with the fram is the quality of the seals and filter material being really cheap so it clogs forcing the filter to bypass itself entirely. Some really good filters like the puralator pure one, the k'n and the fram tough guard have a antidrain valve that is made of silicone instead of rubber like the others (including nissan). Silicone is more flexible in cold weather and seals better. I use mobil 5w30 and the kmart brand penske filter (made by castrol, same as castrol filter) and it has a rubber antidrain valve, and good internal construction. I also keep a large magnet stuck to the side of my oil filter to catch extra stuff.

I run Mobil 1 and was using Wix filters (got a case for free) but was concerned about the anti-drainback valve not working so well. IF the car sat all day on a slant leaning towards the driver side, I would get a little valve chatter until the oil pumped up. I just changed my oil Monday and I put in a Purolator Pure One. Same problem, no difference. Check out this site, they have the solution. Maybe we can get a group deal??

I have used both the Purolator Pure One and the Mobil 1 filters, and both worked fine.
This may be a bit out of date (I used to be in the automotive aftermarket business years ago), but it is probably generally true...
There are only a handful of companies that actually manufacture filters - Allied Signal (Fram), ArvinMeritor (Purolator), Champion Labs, Hastings and Dana (Wix). All other filter brands (including OEM brands such as Delco and Motorcraft, oil company brands such as Mobil and Castrol, and retailer brands such as Pep Boys, Penske, etc.) Are made by one of these companies. The filters sold under these other bard names may or may not be manufactured to different specifications than the filter sold under the manufacturer's own label.
I use Mobil 1 filters, which are made by Champion Labs. The Mobil 1 filters claim to be made to unique specs, but who knows? Even if they are, most of the price difference between the Champ filter and the Mobil 1 is probably marketing costs and profit, not manufacturing costs. Regardless, I am stupid enough to buy them.
I don't know who make the Nissan OEM filter - it may be one of the companies listed above, or there may be a Japanese filter manufacturer of which I am not aware.
Air filters are a different story. The same companies that make oil filters also make air filters, but in this case there are virtually no differences between the brands. In fact, the manufacturers routinely buy filters from each other to complete their product lines. All of the companies make an air filter for a Ford Taurus, and all of the major brands market a version of this filter. But, only one of these will manufacture an air filter for, say, an Acura NSX. So, whether you buy a Fram filter, or a Delco filter, or a Purolator brand filter, all of you choices for an NSX air filter are actually the same product.
There is a web page that attempts to compare filters. I have yet to bring it up today, but there is a summary at http://www.geocities.com/motorcity/d...oilfilst.html.
In reality, I suspect that every oil filter you can buy is perfectly fine. However, if you are going to spend your money on PIAA light bulbs, clear lenses, and other items, spending a bit extra for an oil filter can be a bad thing...

I now only use Nissan Filters
I was a die-hard FRAM customer for many, many years. After I read about the "drainback valve" I realized my car was indeed clicking on startup quite freqently. Switched to Nissan and the noise stopped. Local dealer price $5.

MRLOYD - Sounds like an interesting idead. Can you see the metal bits any better to know that it's working?

I think anyone would be better off using the Nissan filter and get one of those magnets that wrap around the filter for Xtra protection.
