had the same problem 3 times with my '98.
it cranks but won't start, battery good, starter good, have lots of gas too.
1st time got it towed to dealer, they couldn't work on it until the next day, and the next day they started it on 1st try, they still charged me $65 labor.
2nd and 3rd time, i know nothing is wrong, so i just leave it, and it always starts few hours later or the next day.
i think it's got some funny thing to do with alarm system.

Dont bother whacking at the starter, that is what is clicking. The starter still works but it may not be aligned. It could be a bad alternator, but your battery is holding charge like it should.

Have you messed with the battery cables lately. Sometimes there is not enough contact. This happened in my Rx7 once, and I thought it was everything but the battery. I removed the positive cable and tightened it down in a different position and the rotary turned right over.

Also once I replaced my alternator, but it turned out to be a dead battery. I was returning home in the dark and my headlights were slowly fading so I immediately thought my alternator was not recharging my battery. YOu know what happened next.
good luck

that click click click sound you hear is the relay's
happened on my 92 a lot of times.. not on my 95

What happens is if there isn't enuff power to start the car the electronics won't even attempt to spin the starter ..
the safety relays just click .. this is caused by either dead battery , loose battery terminals or a bad connections somewhere..

in your case it may have been a bad connection somewhere or a fault in the electronics somewhere that self resolved..
