Crashed, and Metlife wants to total my Max...

I was hit by an uninsured tow-truck driver who didn't see me coming when he decided to pull a right-hand turn from the left-hand lane without a turn signal. I was next to him, on his right, when he cut his wheel. CRUNCH! I didn't even have a chance to say, "Oh ****."

My Max sustained over $8,500 of damage. The insurance company says my car, as it sits, is worth $5,500, not including my aftermarket parts. And the value of my aftermarket parts is over $12,000.

The adjuster doesn't know what to do. I sent him a detailed listing of all my parts and the prices I paid for them. Where I do not have receipts, I can get duplicates easily, as almost all of my parts were purchased from Stillen, Cattman, The Tirerack, and a local Memphis audio specialist. The adjuster took all the information, including the accident report, and passed it up the ladder to his folks in Charlotte, NC for disposition. I'll probably hear from them early next week.

I'm not going to hold my breath... Wish me luck.

By the way, it seems I escaped serious injury. I've got a few cuts, bruises, and sprains. Nothing that won't heal in a few more days or so, I guess. I'm lucky to be alive.

Sorry to hear about your wreck ...I don't know if most insurance companies will cover aftermarket parts, especially if they're not street-legal, but I could be wrong about that. Good luck with everything, hope it all comes out well.

All my mods are street-legal. And I have to pass a smog test every year to get my tags renewed. I just got my car where I wanted it, and BOOM! All down the tubes.

damn that sucks!
everyone is getting into accidents lately must be that season again...

I say strip the mods, get the cash for the car and either sell the mods or buy another max and put them onto that car... I can't believe the car is only worth 5,500$ by the book.. did u have a lot of miles or something?

Considering the $ in damage, I would not really go for the fix, I would be too afraid they can't fix it to be the way it was.. and in most cases that is what happens. Sorry to hear about that, see if you can get $ for the mods as well, or just get to strip them and get paid for the car. damn truck driver.

Ouch! That must suck. You got mods for over $12,000.00?

According to my research, your car's average retail value is around $6,300.00, so there is null chance of the insurance company changing their mind & paying for the damages to repair the Max.

It's another story if they decide to pay for your aftermarket mods, but highly doubtable unless your insurance company knew what mods you have on your car beforehand so they were covered under the policy. They might pay for a few mods, but it ain't gonna be no where near the 12G's you spend.

Your best bet is to strip the car... take off ALL the mods & sell them seperately, and put the originals back on the Max.

Try your best to get the insurance to pay you more $$$ for your car though. Show them ads of similar cars around your area, if they're selling for higher $. Also show them the NADA retail value of your car - they're valuing is around $7,000.00.

If they decide to total it buy it back from them salvage whatever parts you can and make the car a parts car.

It would be good if you got a maxima again that way you could just swap things around. Either way $$ wise you should come out a bit ahead.

Thinkgs like your clutch fly wheel etc would easily sell on the forums.

Exactly, especially if you know someone that can do work inexpensively.
My friend's brother had his pickup totalled after a fire (in the cab), he bought it back from the insurance. He bought all new interior and some buddies hook him up with the work.
I also have a co-worker who bought his Festia back 3 times from the same insurance company !
If you don't buy it back, before you sign it over to the insurance company, go to the lot and pull all your mods off....there's plenty of people here that have done that.

I think they have to if they are on you're car. When I was in my accident(s) my insurance company had to replace aftermarket wheels, and they were ready to replace the aftermarket suspension, but that wasn't needed.

However, maybe its different with a totalled car?

state farm covered my mods...

I had over $8K in mods on my 91 Mustang when it got stolen, and they covered EVERYTHING, even stuff I didn't have receipts for.

Please clarify

did the uninsured tow truck driver get a ticket? did he have a valid drivers license?. Was he self employed or did he work for a toying company?

The driver had a good driver's license. I think he was self-employed. He was cited for improper turn, no insurance, expired tags, and the tags were originally issued to another vehicle! The passenger, his 8 yr old son, was not wearing a seat-belt. The poor kid got a nasty bump on the head, too. This guy had no business operating that vehicle on a public road.
