how do you count race wins?

how do you count race wins?
if i raced 1 guy 3x, & win all 3 races. am i 3-0? & if i raced 4 more ppl & lost, went for rematches & still lost - so that makes 8 losses? it was only 4 ppl so is my record 3-8 or 3-4? i say 3-4.
