opinions please on what auto body guy told me today...

hi,
i got my spoiler painted and installed about a year ago and still have some of the extra paint in my room. so i went to the shop today and asked him about painting my splash guards(or mud flaps as some call them) and he told me it would probably be about $100 to do it!?! i've seen some people on here have paid $50 which wouldn't be too bad for the same color. keep in mind i have a 95 pearl white so i know the process will take a lil longer because of the three stage and all, but 100 seems crazy. i want them painted half way down on the back sides only. so it's not like i'm using a lot of paint, but he said the process of taping off, sanding down, primering it, painting and adding flex and all that will be most likely $100. please let me know what you think i should do because i really would like to get these done but don't want to pay that much money. ideas? thanx guys

whats their labor rate? the shop I go to charges around $55/h

If you already have the paint then ask them how long does it take to paint and that will tell you how much it should cost depending on their labor costs.

Walk away from this guy as fast as you can. I had a guy that wanted to paint my mirrors for 30 bones. The guy is trying to rip you.

is it a reputable shop? what other kinds of cars have you seen there? would you rather pay $100 and have it done well or $30 and have a half-a$$ job? not saying that someone who will do it for $30 will always do it half-a$$ but you all know what im saying.

It is labor intensive and if you do it wrong and screw up the flex agents it will crack in no time and you will go running back to him, so $100 is not so far fetched. also he may not want the job. it can get ugly time wise quickly, so he probably put in a little padding.

What your saying is that I would use a half assed shop to do paint jobs on my car. Don't undermind the recommendations I make to members here. I'm not here to steer people wrong.

The guy that charged me $30 to paint my mirrors opened his shop back in the 70's and he felt that was a good price to charge me for the job. He could have charged me what the dealership wanted ($89.60) to do the job but he's a honest man. There are people out there like him. What kinds of cars does he have in the shop? What does it matter. If cars are in his shop it means they all f'd up anyways no matter what the make is. He's fixed my pinch welds in the past and did a great job for only $130 painted. Furthermore, were talking about mud guards, not a bumper. Even $100 is to much to paint something you can do yourself for way less.

i wasnt implying that you wont/cant find a GOOD shop that will do it for $30. just telling the guy to be careful and make sure that it IS a reputable shop and does good work for a good price. yes, they are "only" mudguards but what if he went to a shop, paid his "$30," and in 3 months theyre all faded and chipped to all hell. maybe you got lots of money to throw around but i'd rather have the job done RIGHT and last for years.

whats the deal with this post anyway? not having a good day?

Jepht20: take the great advice of the "all-knowing" deezo. his advice on the .org is so respected that no one else's opinion is even worth considering. find anyone who will paint your mudguards for $30, whether he works out of his trailer or works out under an overpass somewhere. deezo guarantees that it will not be a half-a$$ed job.

my apologies on the sarcasm but i am simply making my point a little clearer... for some.

look! i can can do it too.

Here's a crazy idea, how about going to 2 other places and seeing what they have to say? That way you can see if it's in the ballpark or not.

Don't get stupid because you need to reread what you replied to me:

You're questioning me (therefore my reply) and not giving your opinion to someone who cares.

Actually a lot of people here respect his opinion and advice, including myself. I've seen deezo's car many times, and being almost stock it looks better than most of modded maximas out there.
There's no need for you to act like that.

it all depends on the shop.
i can give u a bottom/dirty cheap price. but u bet your **** that i'm getting the cheapest paint i can find.

you can also look at it like...
100 bucks..the guy is still going to use cheap paint..but his profit looks better.

then u have the good guys...
give u a price of 75 or so..does a good job..uses good paint.

BTW paint that you got from the shop from a 1st accident is something the shop does not want to use.

go get 3-4 estimates. don't go the highest and don't go the lowest.
also prices depends on location.

I sent you a nice PM because I'm having a nice day.

I'm not going to even go on with you because I know how to handle my business when it comes to kids like you. Ask anyone here that knows me. Ask them what happened to some punk that tried to get ill with me 2 weeks ago.

Face to face is the way to handle the bickering.

Don't say anything to him Jeff. He knows what's up, that's why he's trying to cover up with stupid replies.

I want you to get the best deal and that's all. I really think $100 is a lot to paint mudgaurds. One of these days I'm going to do mine and I already have the flex paint from Paintscratch.com. It was $30 for the spray can.
