Hey, i know this is a little off topic, but i did a search to try and find out if the altima had a website like this, and i didn't find much. Anyone know? i don't have a maxima yet, but it seems that the altimas are cheaper and faster, so i was trying to find out more info. thanks!

I really don't want to get started down this road for the thousandth time, but anyone has yet to publish or post a better time for the 2K2 Maxima than the 2K2 Altima. They're very close, but the Altima always seems to stay a couple tenths ahead. Doesn't make much sense.

 

On the contrary, I believe the opposite is the case. Where did you get this information? Our fastest 2k2 is Maximus1000 who managed a 14.230. I don't think any Altima has touched that yet although I may be wrong. Please point the way towards this new development if it is so.

 

Possible reasons that the Altima is a hair quicker:

- power is underrated and is really 255 (very possible)
- 5spd tranny is more efficient than 6spd (very possible)

Perhaps less is more.

 

One of the guys ran a 13.9xx in his 2K2 Altima, but everyone from here doubted him because the track had the wrong date printed on the slip (the year was off or something, but it was verified). And while everyone loves to doubt magazine times, the Altima has run 14.1-14.4, versus the Max's 14.4-14.7 results.

 

If the Altima is indeed a skosh more speedy than the Maxima, is that really going to be the determining factor on whether you buy the Altima or Maxima? The difference isn't like night and day, we're talking 10ths of a second here. Even the price of a 3.5 loaded Altima is very similar to the Maxima.

The biggest difference between these 2 cars is their characters, the Maxima is a flagship, well for Nissan, and the Altima, it's the little brother who's not quite ready to wear a suit yet.

The Altima and Maxima race always comes down to the better driver. They are both close in specs. BTW- Nissan is raising the HP figure on the Altima for 2003. I don't know if they are actually changing anything or not.

 

That's kinda how I feel, but so far everyone who has seen our Max or talked to me about it, wonders why I didn't get the Altima instead. They all said they prefer the styling of the new Altima over the Max.

 

i dropped my car off at the dealer yesterday and i asked to drive a 3.5 5-speed while i was waiting for my friend to pick me up. i wanted to feel the difference (or lack there of) for myself.

but the salesman didnt want to me to. "to be honest, the altima will take the maxima from a start. because its lighter. but at high speeds the torque of the maxima will blow the altima away."

i didnt want to say it but arent the altima and the maxima the same speed? and havent they been dyno'ing basically the same HP and TQ #s? i still want to drive one for myself.

 

According to the dealership I go to, next year the interior of the Altima will be revised and the hp will be increased to compete with the upcoming Hond Accord which is said to have a 245HP V6.

 

according to a dealer i went to (Actually 2 different dealers), the 6-speed maxima has 265 HP compared to the 255 HP Automatic maxima. (one told me 265 and one told me 260)

 

Probably b/c the Altima is all new whereas the 2K2 Max is an updated 2K/2K1 mostly.

Who had those numbers? The fastest stock times I saw was 14.3. What did he have done that made it 13.9?

Also- when I bought my 2k2 I originally went to the dealership to look at the Altima. But I found after first test driving the Altima and then the Maxima that the Fit and finish on the Max was far superior. You know, like the difference between a Lexus and a Toyota.
Then the salesman pointed out that the Altima is made in Tenn. and the 2k2 Max is made in Japan.

It was the little things like the quality of the dash material, the dampened action of the cup holder and sun glass holder, ect. It's too bad that we can't seem to get our quality standards here in the good old USA up to snuff. I hope that that doesn't show up when they begin manufacture of the Max in Tenn.

 

The Altima has horrible interior quality compared to the Maxima. I mean, it's really bad. I don't know how someone can sit in an Altima and not notice it.

To be honest, the Maxima still lags way behind Honda and Toyota on interior quality.

Ever take a good look at those door storage compartments? Or the sunglass holder? Not only is the material cheap, you can see the line along the edges where it was cut. Kinda looks like a model airplane assembled by a nine year old.

I won't get started on the ergonomics, or the exterior paint. It's a fun car to drive (in a straight line), but I would take a 245hp 6-spd Accord over a Maxima any day.

You're right about that. Don't listen to carsalesmen because they don't have a clue. Not only that, they'll tell ya anything to make a quick buck.

 

Are you reffering to the 2K2 Alt or the previous gens?

If you are talking about the older Altima's then think about the fact that the Altima is like $5,000 less then a Max. If you think the interior is bad in a Altima you should sit in a Sentra. Again you are talking a $5,000 difference in price.

Some people aren't RICH and can't afford Maxima's so they make do with the best they can. Don't knock them for it....

 

No, we're talking about the new Altimas. And a fully loaded Altima 3.5 costs more than what I paid for my fully loaded 2002 Maxima SE, minus navigation. So the obvious choice at the time was the Max.
