How to make Homelink work -- GUARANTEED!!
How to make Homelink work -- GUARANTEED!!
I know this topic has come up time and time again. Yes, I've done a search, but nobody has been able to nail down a concrete way to get the Homelink to work on every type of garage door opener (GDO). UNTIL NOW!!
Basically, the Homelink copies the rolling code from your existing GDO transmitter, then teaches your GDO what the next hop is going to be for the Homelink. Actually, your hand-held transmitter works the same way, but, of course, first it doesn't have to "learn" what kind of GDO you have. Unfortunately, not all GDOs are compatible with the Homelink system, for one reason or other. For instance, my Wayne-Dalton Quantum GDO is NOT compatible. But, all the Genie receivers ARE COMPATIBLE!
If you've tried to program the Homelink system and still can't get it to work, READ ON.
All you need is a universal receiver kit. For myself, I chose the Genie Intellicode (that's how I know it works). But, others should work. Most of the major GDO manufactures have universal receiver kits. (I believe) they (GDO manufactures) offer the kits so that pre-rolling code models (circa 1985) can "upgrade" to a rolling code technology w/out changing GDOs. Anyway, here's a link to the Genie Conversion kit I'm talking about. It's $49.99. Home Depot (Lowes does not) sells the same kit for the same price, so it might be easier to get it there.
All you do is simply wire the receiver with the include transformer (all the universal recivers use a 24V P/S) and connect it to the same terminals the GDO switch connect to. Program the remote per the included instructions. Then, program the Homelink per their instructions, and you should be set! It's that easy!!! This will work! All Genie receivers (Intellicode and DIP switch receivers are compatible with Homelink)
Enjoy!

Homelink Programming instructions for Rolling Code Receivers:
1. Press and hold the two outer HomeLink buttons until the indicator light
begins to flash (after 20 seconds). Do not hold for longer than 30
seconds. Do not repeat this step to program additional HomeLink buttons.
2. Place the hand-held remote 1-3 inches from the HomeLink button you want
to program.
3. Simultaneously, press and hold both the HomeLink and hand-held remote buttons. Do not release either button until step 4 has been completed.
4. When the indicator light changes from a slow blink to a rapid flash,
release both buttons.
5. At the garage door opener receiver (motorhead unit) in the garage,
locate the"learn" or "smart" button (usually near where the hanging
antenna wire is attached).
6. Press and release this "learn" or "smart" button. (The name of these
buttons vary by manufacturer.) There are 30 seconds in which to initiate
step 7.
7. Firmly press, hold for two seconds, and release the programmed HomeLink
button. Do this procedure again and, depending on the make of your
garage door opener, do this procedure a third time to complete the
procedure.
The garage should now activate when the programmed HomeLink button is
firmly pressed and released.
