Raced a Boxster

One of my buddies had been talking about how badly he could smoke me in his Boxster. He has an 98 Automatic with a Drop in K&N and the dual tip muffler from the Boxster S.
We ran three times from a roll and each time by 80 I had a two car lenght on him. Afterwards he was talking smack about how his car hesitates when he floors it and so on. But he did give props to the Maxima. He admitted that it was a really fast car. One more person learns the awesome power of the Maxima.
He has some aftermarket headers sitting in his living room. I think I will still beat him after that upgrade, it just won't be as easy.

I would think that the Boxster would be faster than a 4th gen, sure looks faster! In reality it's about the same weight as the 4th gen and I think it has more hp but less torque? Also, maybe the Tiptronic causes it to lose time. Surprisingly the S doesn't have outrageous power either. But if you've ever driven a Porsche, beating everyone in races is almost a neglible reward to ownership.

He probably would have taken me if he was stick. The manufacturer's accelartion time for the tiptronic is 7.4 so its realistic to smoke one. Also, his was the 2.5 (?) with 201hp.

Even the new ones with 2.7 & 217hp are a joke. At least in Auto form.

Whats the point of havning a back seat in a 911?

Somtimes ya just gotta wonder, or why drop 60g's on a carrea, when you can drop 60 on an m5 and have it all

I totally agree with that statement. I don't know why Porsche makes them come with autos in the first place.

Aren't your numbers about 25 g's light on either car? Last time I peeked at a Carerra, and it was not a 4, it was a 2, the sticker said 91,000. These cars sell for list price as well. With 60 g's all you'd be able to get is a Boxster S or an M3 if you can find one. Fuggedibout a Carerra or M5, not even used. The BMW 5 body is looking very outdated these days, so you don't get it all with an M5. I'd definitely take a 745Li over a M5, just way too many new features that the old E39 5-series can't deliver. Like water-cooled alternator and iDrive, pretty neat stuff.

Just look at the series numbers--E39 = 5, E46 = 3, E65 = 7. Guess which one is getting the update next???

Last I knew a carrera started at about 70, a boxter at 80 a 911 at 95 and a 911 gt2 was like 140...I looked at an m5 the other day loaded it was about 68,000 plus taxes.

Base Boxster's are slow and overpriced, I beat one rather easily. The Boxster S is a different animal though.

That's what I'm saying. I argued with him for weeks before he bought it about getting it in stick. He got it from Ebay for I think $28k cash. I had found him a nice 98 911 Cabriolet for less then $40k 6spd, but he wouldn't go for it. His reason was that when he goes out with his chick and gets drunk, she can drive them home. She doesn't know how to drive stick and won't learn.

agreed

a co-worker bought a brandy-new 2001 M5... first trip to the dealer he was told it was something like $68k but when all was said and done, he said there was *NO* way the dealer would have let it go for that. He ended up spending more like $78k, then taxes/delivery/etc pushed it over $80k.

funny sidenote... since then he got a lot of stuff... he got an ex-wife, who in turn got a slightly used M5, and he got a BRAND NEW Ford Windstar! I laugh at him every day.

As far as opting for an M5 over a Carerra, i think its a personal matter of taste and preference...the Porsche and the BMW are completely different machines mechanically and aesthetically. As for buying a boxter...why not just get yourself an older 928....those bad boys will do 13's stock. Plus they just look cool IMHO.

I used to like those when I was younger. Unfortunetly, diehard porsche enthusiasts never took to that car because of the front engine layout.

But hey, I'll take a front engine porsche if it'll get me chicks like Rebecca DeMornay...as a hooker.
