HELP, tranny probs, BAD, going to nissan tomorrow

ok so last night around 11 i'm cruisin downtown springfield like usual pimpin and i'm coming home. i go to shift 4-5 at like 50 or so and it won't go in, at all, i push a little, go back to neutral clutch up and down try again NADA. so i try 4th, 3rd, 6th WTF the shifter is totally stuck in neutral. freaking out i pull over into a gas station, luckily across from baystate nissan. me and my friend sit there for a minute, i turn the car on and off, try the gears again, with it on and off, nothing. i'm like 2 seconds away from pushing it to nissan and leaving it there and it goes into gear. so i take off, saying i'll call nissan tomorrow. the shifter felt a little stiffer then usual. so today i'm going from the branch to the main office to run some supplies and i go to go into 5th and nada, BUT i get RIGHT back into 4th BARELY and just keep going, immediately get on the phone with nissan, explain. they tell me to bring it in in the morn, i explain this all to him, he says leave my name on the envelope i'll try to duplicate it and then we'll fix it. so i'm driving around still and it does it for 3rd and then starts working again. WTF is going on, could it be something simple like the cable is loose or what. i'm supposed to leave for hampton beach on wednesday and i'm worried. any ideas??

5th gen forum search, using 6-speed and problem as the word descriptors, although I don't recall not going into a gear as an issue. But, there have been enough probs documented in there to get you started...

Sorry, Steve, but I would be renting a vehicle for my 4th of July festivities........

Steve,

Ethan busted his shifter linkage cable thingy a little while back. I believe he was dumping the clutch hard and it busted the linkage to his tranny. It's something new Nissan put in the 6-speed tranny's that no maxima has ever had. You probubly don't understand what i'm saying but I think this verywell could be the problem. PM Ethan for more info.

You killed a poor birdie? (looking at your sig pic)

Yes, manuals have a shifter linkage as well. 2 cables, left/right & up/down.

Steve: Im not sure why my tranny got stuck. It has not done it recently though. Im not gonna pull the tranny to find out though. Next time I have the tranny off the car I'll pull it apart to see what happened. BMXsteve also has a similar problem.

Pocket: Yea thats a bird alright. It happened GOING DOWN the drag strip. Click on the picture to read the thread.

Mine got stuck last week in 5th a gear. Noway in hell I could get it out. Towed my car 100 miles . I took my tranny apart, and I realized that the rod that shifts the gears into 5th and reverse was in backwards. The rod has grooves on the bottom where the ball & spring work. ONe side has 3 grooves and one side has one. I had it facing the wrong way, which made it sometimes stuck in reverse as well. I know that if you have this rod in backwards, you can shift the first & second gear in, while 5th is engaged (when you move the fork with your hand while having the tranny open). It also causes funny shifting in other gears.......that is comparing it to the correct way that I have it now.

I was thinking of that but if he snapped the cable braket he would know for sure. Maybe he has a loose cable or the braket is out of wack?

Good luck Steve

Are the clutches hydraulic (I have an auto)? It could be that your clutch master cylinder is just low on fluid. It may be that your cluch is not releasing all of the way. This would give you some of the symtoms you are experiencing.

but what happens is it just won't go into gear at all. like hitting a wall, it got stuck totally in neutral on sunday. i went in to nissan this morning and had them look at it, it was acting up on the way there. i got the manager to get a service tech and we went for a ride and he heard 3rd gear stratch BAD several times and it wouldn't downshift into second at one point. they said they would definetly fix it but they were boooked till next tuesday so i have the car and i'm babying it till tuesday when i hope they give me a new tranny.

Can you get it into gear when the car isn't running? Does it grind when it doesn't go into gear?

If it is just a clutch issue, you should be able to shift to all gears with the engine off ONCE THE GEARS ARE ALIGNED AND NOT IN A BIND.

Try shifting with the engine off. If it doesn't shift or is very stiff, start the engine, let the clutch out, stop the engine and try again. Try this at least 2-3 times before giving up.

If it does shift with the engine off, then have someone push in the clutch pedal while you check under the hood for movement on the end of the throw-out bearing fork. If it doesn't move (or moves very little) then it is a hydraulic problem, i.e., low fluid, bypassing master cylinder, leaking slave cylinder. If it does move, then you probably have a bad clutch diaphram.

no it the gear doesn't work and i pull over and shut it off it still doesn't work, when it doesn't go into gear it doesn't grind it's just like pushing against a wall, no noise, no more motion nothing, totally locked out.

GOOD NEWS KINDA, i went to nissan this morning and i was gonna leave the car for them to look at during the day and try to get it to do it but luckily it started acting up on the way there so i parked it, and got the assistant manager and he sent a tech out right away and we went for a ride, 2nd gear locked out once and 3rd made a horrible sound every time i shifted it, his face cringed when it happened. so they know it really happens and they said that something is definetly wrong but they can't loko at it till next tuesday and that then they would get to the bottom of it and fix it up. so we'll see if they try and screw me over this time.
