Maxima Hood latch WORKS real well
Ok so I was cruising around and parked my car and just popped the hood to let it vent. 5 minutes later my friends and I took off and I had completely forgot I popped the hood until I got home. Let's see, over 100 MPH, like 4 runs up to 100 against my friends.
Damn I'm so glad that latch held, at least I know now on real hot long trips I can pop that thing and cruise at 80ish without any worries.

thats a good thing that it held...i'd be ****ed scared if suddenly the hood comes flyin up....that could also cause a bad accident...

hah.....my friend drives a 91 and rear-ended someone a while back...he's been driving with the hood latch all messed up and it moves up and down on the highway. it turns everyones head because it looks so bad but has suprisingly held for a while. always makes me think of Tommy Boy...

Just my experience with Maxima's, but neither of mine had any problems with heat (and I live in Louisiana). I think Nissan did a pretty good job on the design of the cooling system that riding with a popped hood is unnecessary. It may (& this is just a thought) actually mess up the designed airflow of the cooling system. It's designed to pull air through the radiator to cool the coolant that flows through the engine to pick up the heat. If you have air coming behind the fan from a popped hood, it may not let the fans pull air through the radiator as efficiently as they should. Kinda the same theory behind my '78 Camaro not running the fan shroud. Would overheat at idle because not enough air being pulled through the radiator, but rather from the sides. Buddy had same problem with his '76 Blazer. Re-install the fan shroud, and all was fine. Could same theory work here? I don't know. From a safety standpoint, I wouldn't do it. Hood is designed to crumple on impact. If only part of the front latch is latched, it may just give and come through the windshield, or just pop up, on impact. I wouldn't want to be the one to see if either of those would happen. I don't see the necessity of it at all if your cooling system works.
