I believe Coke should do the trick. Also you can buy those little cloth things that slip on top of the terminal and prevent the corrosion.

Baking soda also neutralizes that acid buildup

After you clean it off, coat the terminals with dielectric grease before you reconnect it.

I use a paste made from baking soda and water and scrub it on with an old toothbrush. Works like a charm. Lithium grease works well for preventing corrosion buildup on the terminals.

To answer your question, yes. It's corrosive buildup that does NOT conduct electricity. Don't let it build up too much or it will keep your batt. from charging. Happened to me in Indy, car wouldn't start.

Lick it!... j/k..dont even...wear some GLOVES..and clean it off with baking soda...and COKE does work...so just use that..clean it up..and if you go to your local auto parts store you can buy the cloth rings that go under thoes...and the grease to prevent all this. That gunk is corrosive and bad for you!

You can also use a battery terminal cleaner (wires on the inside of this gadget) to remove tough stains/rust/corrision.

Another way to prevent corrosion is to add those red/black or green/red battery terminal rings. They're little foam pieces that cost about a buck at any parts store.

Oops, wrong Coke. Atleast my battery is happy... Seriously, it works. Check your cables to make sure the corrosion isn't going up them (it spreads like rust). Also, if you have a maintenance type battery, make sure the caps are tight. Fumes from the battery cause corrosion. I always use the felt rings to prevent it. Don't know how, but they work. I haven't cleaned my terminals on this car since I got it May 2001, and they are still clean.
