check out the gen forum about the RVM UDP which don't have steel sleeves on them is causing it to wear down fast where the oil seal sit.... and which is causing oil leak..... and it's not due to mistake in install....

You are correct ][ 35. My advise is simple:

DO NOT PURCHASE AN RVM UDP UNLESS IT COMES FITTED WITH A STEEL SLEEVE FOR THE OIL SEAL TO RIDE ON.

The steel sleeve I'm referring to is NOT the same thing as the timing ring.

For further information on the importance of the steel sleeve in preventing damage to the pulley as well as your engine, see the following instructions from Unorthodox Racing regarding the installation of their Maxima pulley:

http://www.unorthodoxracing.com/inst.../02100100_.pdf

Pay particular attention to the bold, underlined section that begins with the words, "The new crankshaft pulley is equipped with a steel sleeve . . ."

Caveat emptor!

I just received an e-mail from RVM indicating that their pulley does not include a steel sleeve. Their "fix" is to remove the pulley. Then re-install it and retorque it to spec.

I replied that my pulley is already torqued to spec and that I had not as yet experienced an oil leak. But I did ask them how it was possible that their pulley does not require a steel sleeve to prevent abrasion from the oil seal while practically every other UDP manufacturer does require the use of a steel sleeve.

We'll see what they have to say.

I wanted to have this pulley installed but now i don't know because i don't want to pay to have it installed and then uninstalled and then reinstalled when i return it and get a new one. When are the ones with the "right" size timing rings and steel sleeves coming out and can i exchange this one for the problem free one. If not can i have them pay for the unistallation and reinstallion of the new pulley when mine starts throwing codes, has trouble startin, and leaks oil.

RVM stated that the reason they did not produce a sleeved UDP was because UR did not produce a sleeved UDP for the Maxima when that issue was under investigation. I sent an e-mail to UR asking whether they ever produced an unsleeved UDP for the Maxima. This was URs response:

The Maxima pulley has always had the steel sleeve. If you think your pulley doesn't have one please call me at 631-586-9525 ext.12

Joe Menechino

I forwarded a copy of UR's response to RVM.

RVM also indicated that they could not retrofit old Maxima pulleys to accept steel sleeves. But they will incorporate steel sleeves into their next production run. Lastly, they said that of the 200 or so Maxima UDPs they've sold, they've only received three or four complaints for oil leakage.

Hope that helps.

That won't do you any good, ][ 35. Even if you could find a steel sleeve that would fit, RVM states that the tolerances are too tight to allow the pulley to be reinstalled properly.

that is just an excuse so that they don't have to replace it for the mistake they have done..... i'm in the process of looking around for the steel sleeve and one of the auto part store here in TX said they might have it b/c the old chevy cars have replacement parts for steel sleeves for the UDP..... and they will get some in see if those will fit or not.....

so i'm not asking them to fix the problem or provide the steel sleeve.... all i'm asking is to replace my part so that once i have found the sleeve i can reinstall it for the 2nd time....

Replacing the pulley should not be necessary, ][ 35. The sleeve is installed with epoxy. Epoxy will completely fill in the abrasion in the aluminum left by the oil seal. Once the sleeve is seated onto the pulley, it will be good as new. The only question is whether or not the pulley will cause the seal to leak due to pressure exerted on it by the extra thickness of the sleeve.

Good luck. Let me know how you make out.
