I'm not trying to say they're bad, I'm buying one myself, and I have one on my 2002 Dodge Ram, and had on on my '91 Twin Turbo 300ZX... but just wanted you to know the facts before making statements like the one you made above...

Underdrive Pulley "Free" power that is lost due to ROTATIONAL MASS. They work the same way as a a lightented flywheel... they don't MAKE power, they free it... BUT, what an underdrive pulley does that a lightened flywheel does not is remove some harmonic balancing from the rotational assembly (pulley, crank, pistons, rods, flywheel, clutch & pressure plate).

Dinan "Power Pulley" White Paper

that harmonic balacing from the pulleys gets removed for a fact. that's totally true on most american vehicles. luckily, our vq's harmonic balacing damper is not removed along with the pulley. our engine was said to be internally balanced. this design eases up the trouble we might encounter when replacing pulleys. of course this isn't the main reason nissan did that. nissan proves its japanese automotive technology advances once again by eliminating the harmonic balancer dampers. come on man, some gm engines are still using push-rods today. the heck with that, these japanese guys are superior in the automotive technology, and we can't top that for a fact.

so mad-max is totally correct if harmonic dampers is your only issue to prove him wrong.

Well there is a rubber ring in our Crank Pulley... I know this for a fact because mine seperated a short while ago and I had to replace it (thankfully I was able to find a used stock one, as I didn't want to drop the $200 for an Unorthodox Pulley). So there IS a harmonic dampener designed into the pulley... but I agree, the engine is fairly well internally balanced, especially being a V engine... but there is still some dampening done by the stock pulley... I just wanted to make individuals aware, that there "IS" a remote chance for increased engine wear when running an underdrive pulley... but on a V engine it is much less of a risk than an inline engine...

dude, that rubber is a seal. this harmonic discussion had been brought up long ago in many other threads. other guys talked enough about this issue. our harmonic damper isn't needed because of internal balancing. nissan makes these cars for easy modifications. guys with vq engines only encounter a oil leak problem. if your harmonic theory holds true for our car, then after the pulley installation, the engine will vibrate and worse, even wobble. but no one had reported such problems. i saw it on video about the dampers in a chevy engine rebuild. they also did the udp, and having to put on the new dampers. well, we don't have that to worry about.

anyways, don't miss out on this good deal.

DUDE, no take a LOOK at your pulley... I'm not talking about the rubber BEHIND it... there are TWO metal discs that are BOUND together by a rubber RING, i.e. a harmonic BALANCER. Please go look at what you're talking about before you start preaching...

When mine fell apart, as they can, the alternator/ac compressor belt ring/disc came OFF the rest of the crank pulley... the inner section, and the power steering ring/disc were still bolted to the block... the rubber between them deteriorated and allowed the rings/discs to seperate. THIS is a HARMONIC BALANCER. I'm not talking about a simple rubber oil seal that is contain "behind" the crank pulley on the crank shaft...

And I'm still buying one, I simply wanted to let people know the facts... that yes, there is a harmonic balancer contained in the stock pulley, and yes there is a SMALL risk in changing to a none harmonicly balanced underdrive pulley, but its not that big a deal... but it still exists...

I've got the two rings/discs sitting at home... you want a photo for proof? Just take a look at any Maxima with some mileage on it... if you look at the crank pulley, inside the outer ring between it and the center of the pulley, you'll see an area with some stress deterioration... looks like any other piece of rubber that has aged (ball joint, steering rack boot, etc) and it will have stress cracks in the rubber... that area of rubber is the Harmonic Balancer. It looks a little different on all cars, but it normally exists in some shape or form on EVERY engine currently in production... Nissan 300ZX VG30DE(TT) engines have them, Dodge V8s have them, pretty much every engine has one... they just look a little different. Some manufacturers take more care in balancing their engines than others (hence your Chevy example), but even Nissan puts a balancer on its engines...

I'm not trying to steer anyone away from it... I just didn't want people to think that there is NO danger at all with using an underdrive pulley... there is a small amount of risk, just like using any other aftermarket part... =) But this is still a killer deal, and I'm definitely buying one...

well, now i think i am mis-informed by the old guys who did the pulley talk in the past. they all pointed out that our VQ's come with a built in harmonic balancer. replacing the pulleys, we don't have to worry about the dampers at all. i went down to take a look at all 4 of my maxima's pulleys. it seems like my 95 pulley is a little different than the 97 pulley. it's really similar, but 95 pulley looks bulkier. but it could be just too dirty. i dont know anymore. however, besides oil seal leak, there are no other problems i heard about replacing pulleys in this car.

Ok...i am anxious and getting the itch...my question is for anyone who has replaced their pulley on an 02. question is, did you do it yourself, and if so, is it a backyard project or should a professional do it. my buddys shop lists 1.2hrs to do the job, but he didn't give me too many details regarding the steps involved, so i am just looking for a little insight. thanks

So, from all this who has had problems with an aftermarket pulley? I have only heard people talking about some one who has had a problem with it. I ram yet to hear anyone say they had a problem with the pully. All I hear is the he said she said. So who has had problems? They seem to be rare..

it's not a backyard job, you'll have to get someone with a high torque powertool to install it.

There are write ups on how to do this with or without an impact wrench. Its not a hard job to do, the belts are the PIA.

I have read the write up's for the 4th gen install and it seems pretty easy. I am going to attempt "the backyard job."

To break my bolt loose on the crank, I had to have a friend put it in 5th, and stand on the brakes with his foot, then a buddy of mine and I yanked on the bolt with a pipe slid OVER a breaker bar... and it BARELY came loose... I broke a 3/8 to 1/2 adapter while I was at it. I tried a 90ft/lb impact, and then a friend brought a beefier snap on impact, and it still wouldn't move... finally got it loose with the breaker bar as I described. Its not a 1 man operation, that's for sure... and I've have NO idea how to suggest to get it off with an automatic trans (you can't "lock" the transmission with an automatic by putting it in gear like you can a manual trans, you'd probably have to drop the starter and have someone hold a screwdriver in the teeth of the torque plate keeping it in place while you attempted to loosen the crank bolt).

Well according to Haynes Repair manual page 2B-15 you would use a chain strap wrench to hold onto the crank pulley and using a breaker bar to loosen the nut.

With my 5spd, the pulley would still turn when it was in gear during the install, was i doing someting wrong?

Were you going it yourself? The maxima is an open diff up front... if one wheel is off the ground, that wheel turns... i.e. the one you took off to get access to the crank pulley. =) That's why I had a friend of mine sitting in the car with his foot on the brake, to lock both wheels in place so I could torque against them. Brakes being locked and the car in gear, locked the drivetrain in position. Otherwise, the engine will just roll over as you attend to torque it off.

hey morphy, please ask brett sandstorm to see approximately when the pulleys will start to sell. i'm debating whether to get the ebay pulleys or not. it's about the same thing but cost a little bit less. however, it still seems to me that this pulley is a bit lighter. anyways, i need to know which one comes first now since i just got the mevi put on, and i want to regain some of my mid range power. pulley needs to come in asap!!!

He sent me an email the other day and didn't have a definitive answer, which wasn't great news, but said he would update me as soon as he had more info on arrival date. I would be careful with the ebay pulleys...oil rings and stuff could cause some problems, but if you feel comfortable with the product, like any ebay purchase, weigh your options. I was afraid ppl would start getting the bug and bailing for other deals or other mods...I hope this doesn't become a trend. I let Brett know ppl were getting restless, so they are aware that the pressure is on them to get em done. I am sure they are moving it as fast as they can. All I can say is that I am sure it will be worth the wait. Thanks again guys! Hang in there.

Thanks for keeping us updated.
I would like to get it sooner than later, but I have no problem waiting.
As long as I don't sell the Max before then, my name will stay on the list.
