Use only GL-4 rated gear oil.

Re: GL4 or GL5 in 99 i30t manual tranny

GL-5 lubes contain an extreme pressure additive that allow them to be used in differentials, etc. Some gear oils are formulated to meet both GL-4 and GL-5 applications. I have several folks using AMSOIL synthetic gear oil (80/90 or 75/90) in their Nisan and Subaru transaxles with outstanding results. These lubricants are recommended for GL-4, GL-5 and MT-1 applications. Price is $5.85/qt, dealer cost, plus tax and UPS).

The company also offers an 80/90 GL-4, MT-1 gear oil, but the smallest package it comes in is gallon containers ($14.90/gal, dealer cost, plus tax and UPS). ed
