I'm pretty sure they're not bulbs - I think they're actually EL backlit.

That is correct according to the manual, anyway. The are electroluminescent (sp?). That's why you don't see any inconsistency in the lighting from side to side or top to bottom no matter which way / direction you view them. (I'm talking '02 & '03 - don't think '01 I30 had this - but "I've been known to be wrong before"...)

I beg to differ.
I think that they are plain old bulbs and there is inconsistency in the gauge cluster, (at least in mine there is), if you sit in the passenger side seat it is obvious but in the drivers seat they look perfect. 50 and 60 MPH are way more brighter than 40 MPH sitting in the passenger seat. I wish someone else would confirm this so that i know that it is not just my car. I noticed this the first time I sat in the passenger side seat and let someone else drive. So from what I can see from the passenger side, they just used brighter than normal bulbs but never thought about what it would look like from the passenger side.

Sorry - I'm just toeing the party line. I haven't really noticed anything that would tip me off, but I'll have to admit that I'm almost always behind the wheel when I drive my I-35 (maybe never sat in the passenger seat more than once or twice?)...

Frankly, what you're saying makes me think they are EL, though - since EL lights would look different from the side than they would "face on" - I'm certain someone will know for sure!
