99 Limited Wood Steering Wheel

I really want to get that limited wood steering wheel. My old leather wheel has hole rubbed through it about 2 inches long the top section. The only problem is that I have a 97, which has a different spoke and cover set up than the 98-99 style wheels. The cruise control switches are different as well. Do I need it convert my entire wheel set up to make this work? Has any one ever done the swap?

I do remember reading in the group deals forum that some one had found a place that can make you a wood wheel like the limited wheel (wood on the top and bottom but leather on the sides), but that was a while back. Any body ever heard of this before?

There is a different airbag setup for the 98-99 versus the 96-97.

You need to swap wheels, airbags, and MAYBE airbag control modules. Some maxima guys did it- let me try to look into it.

How much and how difficult is it to install? I though you had to replace the airbag which would really drive up the cost. If I can do it with my existing airbag than I would be interested.

You are basically swapping out the steering wheels
only. I put mine on myself. There is only one thing
you need to get: the adaptor for the tool to loosen
the bolt that's holding the airbag in. (I can source those too)

(if you look from the side.. it's the star type with little circle
in the middle). You keep your exisiting Airbag.. and
crusie control.... you are only swapping out the
steering wheel.

Instruction goes like this:
PARK your car on a flat surface.. and make sure the
steering is pointing straight.

1. Unplug the Negative from the battery terminal
2. Loosen the Bolts holding the airbag (one on each
side)
3. disassemble the steering colum and steering wheel.
4. once the airbag bolt is off.. you can easily remove
the airbag.. and unplug the harness.
5. then two small screws to remove the crusie control
6. unplug the harness for cruise control
7. one big bolt in the middle holding the steering
wheel... use a torque ranch to lossen it then you can
remove the steering wheel from the steering colum.
8. four more screws to remove the steering back cover
from the steering wheels

Now.. put the back steering covers back to the NEW
leather/wood steering wheels... and REVERSE the above
instruction...

NOTE..after you put back everything.. then.. you
re-connect the negative of the battery.. this way..
the Airbag light will NOT come on....

Well by looking at the photos you supplied that is not the same style of wheel that I have. I have the 96-97 I30/ 95-96 Maxima wheel which actually has different spokes and wheel cover and cruise control switches. I want to get the wood wheel, but I would have to at least replace the cover and possibly the cruise control switches. That that is assuming that the two differemt wheels mount the same. I will email you a picture so you can see what it looks like.

I think that he was saying that if he can see your wheel to confirm the design, then he can get you one in that style/fit that will be a direct-replacement.

Lets hope so... That would be awsome if we could get the wood wheel in the old style. I noticed you have a 97 like me so we are in the same boat as far as this goes.

I found a picture off of car domain. Even though this is a 95 Maxima, the wheel set up is exactly the same.

Here is the other set up that would be a direct fit for the wood wheel that sycefiro posted.

I've seen a wood style steering wheel on some 97 Maxima's that I've walked pass through parking lots, looks nice, can see why you'd want it The one I saw seemed to have more wood then the ones posted here though, I'll have a look tomorrow two Maxima's at my Uni have it

I am going to call infiniti direclty and see if the wood wheel can mount where the 96-97 style wheel was, and then just buy new cruise control switches and the wheel cover. I doubt that will work, so I will probably buy a leather one from a scrap yard.

I have a 97 I30, which has the same steering wheel that you have in your car. I installed a wood/leather wheel from a cefiro of the same steering-wheel type from Japan. The wood wheel is much nicer with regard to the thickness and the way it looks (matches the wood in my car). However, I havent figured out all the minor issues. The cruise control, etc all work perfectly fine, although, be aware that the holes for much of that hardware inside the wheel do not line up the same as with our American edition wheel. You can still get by however. The only problem with my wheel is that the horn doesnt shut off, but I haven't been with my car for over 6 months now (its still back in Buffalo and I'm in Miami) but I think i've figured out why its honking like crazy. I just have to get back to buffalo next month and figure out if my plan works or not.

You will need a Torx T-50 tamper proof bit to get the special bolts out of your car that allow removal of the airbag unit. This bit can be purchased for really cheap on the internet. I bought mine as a set (i could not find one that was a single bit for cheaper than the entire set). THe set's brand is Powerbilt, but I do not recall which website i got it from for really cheap. Search around and give it a try. You wont be able to find this bit at the local sears or home depot, so dont bother trying (although, you may get lucky). And make sure you dont just get the regular T50 bit that doesnt have the tamper proof hole in the center. You will also need to get a huge torque wrench (rent one from Autozone) with an adjustable head so that you can go in at an angle to clear the steering wheel frame. The bolt for the wheel was 1/2' i think (sorry if i'm wrong on the size, its been a while). You will need a friend who hold the wheel tight while you loosen that bolt too. also, be sure to pull your battery and pull your airbag fuse and wait around an hour just to be safe. Here are the two best pics i could find of my install, good luck:

WOW..... that will definitly fit!!! However, if you say that this wheel has caused the car to sound the horn all the time, I don't know if it is worth it.

I am still interested though. Who did you get the wheel from and how much did it cost? The guy that has gotten me all of my cefiro stuff in the past has not responded to the three emails I sent to him about this.
