97 I30 (w/ 5MT). What years of ECU are compatible?

Obviously I need a 5MT ECU, and most likely a 96-99, but is there a limit to what years of ecu will work in the 97 I30?

I am throwing CEL codes like mad and despite "fixing" and resetting, the lights keep coming back. It has been suggested that I may have an ECU fault.

You might want to post this is the 4G forum if you haven't already. You should be able to use 95-98 ECUs without problems, but you might still have a CEL if you get the wrong year. I have a 98 and I'm using a 96 ECU but I have CEL. There are plenty of 98 owners running older ECUs as well and noone seems to have any problems other than the CEL.

yeah... this is a difficult question I have pondered myself (I really want to mod the ECU). The best bet would be to get a new 97 MT ECU since that is the year of the car. You would be free of any CELs due to a faulty ECU. However, I believe that the ECU mod is not an option on the 97-99 (not sure of this, but maybe the new stillen "piggy back system" will work on the 97-99 ECU).

So you could get a 96 ECU and pray that the CEL does not come on!! From what I can remember, I30tMikeD used a 98 ECU on his 96 without triggering a CEL, but I dont know if it will work the other way around.

Eventhough the 96 and 97 I30s are practically the same, I believe the 96 does not have an ambient airflow sensor (located in the main stock airduct) like 97 and up does. So there could be even more sensors in the 97 and up, and that could cause a CEL.

Keep us posted!!

I think that I am screwed, because the 95 is OBD-1, 96 has the aforementioned ambient sensor, and 97-98 are the same. Unfortunately, they made less MT 97-98 than they did in the errlier years, so they are hard to find. I just want a STOCK 5MT ECU...

I will post it in the 4th gen and see if I get better response (not that your responses were not helpful).

stick with a 97-98 5MT ECU. A 95/96 will most likely throw a CEL for the o2 sensor on the cat. I used a 98 auto maxima ECU, car ran fine but I had like 10 codes.
