Sticky Gas Gague??
Sticky Gas Gague??
My 98 t seems to run great!
Unfortunately the stupid dealer wouldn't fill the gas tank "due to rasing CA gas prices." (I guess they stopped that on all cars they sell there). So anyhow, I bought it with about a 1/4 tank and drove it home (60-some miles) filled the tank and it took about 15.5 gallons ($36!!).
ANYWAYS my question is...when I started the car after filling it, the gauge went up to between 3/4 and F. Then after driving a while, parking, then restart, it went ALL the way to "F". Then on another startup, it read 3/4...then another startup, FULL...etc, etc.....Any ideas??

Razel, just want to know if you too had experienced any problem with the gas guage? I posted a message two days ago abt the malfunctioning of gas guage in my car (problem: it will not go all the way to the Full even when I fill in full tank). Also, did you use this Techron stuff in your car?
Thanks
Thanks
I didn't have this gas guage problem with the I30, but in three other cars, I've had various gas guage problems. In a 90 Infiniti M30, the guage was fine, but the low gas light hardly ever came on. BG44K (uber-fuel system cleaner) solved that. On a 92 Honda Prelude, the low gas light came on at various gas guage levels. Anywhere between 1/16 and 1/4. Chevron Techron Concentrate and a constant load of LubeControl's Fuel Power (fuel system cleaner, lubricator, and fuel energy maximer) solved that. In fact, it's been consistent ever since I been using a constant load of Fuel Power. In my 01 I30, I regularly use Chevron Techron Concentrate 1K before an oil change and Fuel Power every fill up. The gas guage and low gas level light is consistently lights up when I have about 3.5 gallons left.
If the fuel system cleaner doesn't work, then you may have to open up the gas tank and see what's up with the fuel level meter and sender. This isn't too bad. Just remove the rear seat bottom and it's right there. Go to your local library or auto store and read the auto manuals (Chilton, etc.) for the same generation Maxima to see how to test the fuel level meter and sender.

Thanks Razel for the explaination, I bought Chevron Techron Concentrate and it did work out!!! yahooo!!! The fuel guage is working all right now! I just dropped in the full bottle and I hardly drove 2 miles and the indicator went all the way to the Full... Cool ...
hmm .. i thought the Techron did the job, but the magic needle is back ... it doesn't go up all the way ...
do we need to check the fuel filter condition after adding fuel system cleaners ? Is there a How To Do stuff on fuel filter ? thanks.
lastly, any solution to this nagging needle problem ??

You need to change your fuel float. Its accessed by removing the bottom part of the rear seat. You will see a triangular cover with 3 screws. Remove that. Unplug the connections (fuel and electric), and carefully remove the assembly (I think there are 8 screws in a circle).
You will see a round cylindrical pump, and a float with a little plastic balloon on the end of it.
The part that senses how far the balloon is up or down is bad in your car. It works by a rheostat. If the fuel level is such that the float is on a worn part of the sensor, it will read either full or empty.
Anyway... the fuel level float is what you need. Your dealer does not have to drain or even remove the tank to do this. Just wouldnt have it full if I were you.
