96 I30 5spd owners

Might need a huge favor from one of you. I sold my JWT ECU, which was my stock 5psd I30 ECU, and now I am running a 96 5spd maxima ECU. Cars runs and drives fine but I am getting 7 different codes. I have had the car torn apart for the last few weeks. Intake manifold off, headers and y-pipe removed so I may have missed something in putting it all back, but I don't think I am going to be able to clear all these codes.

Here is the thing, I have to get emission tested very soon...I was supposed to do it last month. In IL they don't test your exhaust they just pull your codes and any code present is failing.

Who thinks they can let me use their 5spd ECU? I will send you the ECU I am using, which will work fine besides the CEL. You send me your 5spd ECU so I can get emission tested then we will swap back. Of course I will pay for all the shipping and will send you mine first so you car will never have to be down.

Thanks for the offer but I will get a CEL with an auto. Looks like I am going to just buy a 5spd I30 ECU.

PM'd you about the codes. I always wondered about Envirotest rules. Can't you just reset the ECU in line before pulling in? Won't it take 30-50mi to light the MIL up again? Or can't you apply for extension time if the car isn't running?

I would have thought that a maxima 5 spd. ECU of the same year would have given no problems. With your car being torn apart like that, it sounds like you are putting it back to stock. Are you gonna sell it and move on?

I have reset it and the codes came back within 5 miles.

Going to the test place with a freshly reset ECU will not allow them to doin their check. They will get "Computer not ready" and you will have to come back. Happend to me last time.

The evap system is different on the I30. Like I said, the car runs and drives fine witht the maxima ECU and the codes would not bother me if I did not have to get emission tested.

Well if I ever get mine for JWT, I will have my stock ECU just lying around for you to use. That might be a while, even though they've had it for 5 months, so if you need it sooner, I guess you could use mine thats in the car right now. Let me know...

Seems like a good deal for the basic componets. Finding the small stuff like gauges, couplers, and hoses should be no problem.

Yep.

It's gonna take about another $1,200 to get it up and running with just the basics. Intercooler, BOV, wastegate, fuel pump, boost and fuel pressure gauge, clutch. Another $1,000 to safely run more than 6 or 7 lbs of boost. ECU tune, injectors, MAF. I will hope to not spend more than around $4k for everything. Not too bad considering what some guys have spent. Now if I start blowing motors and kiling trannies then things will get a bit more expensive.

What are you going to replace with that extra grand in order to run more than 6 psi of boost?

Like posted above, to run more than 6-7 psi safely I need either a JWT ROM tune or greddy e-manage...both are roughly $600. 550cc injectors...almost no cost for me. Z32 MAF...$100. And some more engine management than just a boost gauge and fuel pressure gauge...cost will vary greatly depending on what I get. It wil cost me *about* 1K or more to take my turbo that extra step in the safe, correct way that I want to do it.

I see. How much boost do you think that the VQ can handle before major modifications like high performance rods and pistons for example are needed?

I have yet to hear of someone blowing a properly tuned VQ30 because of too much power. Hal put down 600lbs of torque on stock internals. I doubt the limit is too much further than that but who really knows. The tranny and other things like head gaskets will go way before the motor will go.

It is all in having it tuned properly

I had confidence in the stock internals of this motor, but many of my friends, who don't have faith in the VQ, keep telling me that it was needed.

So what psi are you going to run after the ecu, injectors, and maf upgrade? I was thinking about running 10.

I plan to run 9-10 on a daily basis and bump it up a bit for the track, it kinda depends on what type of power I am putting down at those types of boost levels. It's depends more on torque/hp than lbs of boost. I would like to not either bust my tranny or have to build one.

Sorry... been busy. Anyways, I was hoping to achive about 150 hp by running a SC at 10 psi. Is that a good ball park guess of power?
