Cold weather - no start

Hello all,

... so the cold weather comes and the dreaded cold (no)-start comes back. I crank the car, it starts and revs to 1000rpms and than just drops and stalls and does so every time Ill try to start. The only remedy is to hold the accelerator pedal while starting and revv the car for few seconds and than it goes to normal.

I have searched on net for "maxima" and "cold" and "start" and I have seen some pages which explains how to repair a faulty harness which is suppoused to cause this problem.

I took my Haynes manual and started looking at all the emission compnents and there are two which I think might also cause above problem. One is a Fast Idle Cam which is built into intake and the whole intake would have to be replaced, if bad and another is Idle Air Control Valve which is a stepper motor and since it is a movable part, it might go bad eaisly. Both parts are rather pricy, IAC is around $300 and who knows how much is the whole intake.

Im sort of grasping for straws at this point beause there are NO MIL codes on my dash.

Has anyone done this? or maybe had fixed above problem? , seems to be common on 96' max and I30.

Thanks in advance. regards, Bart.

Thank You for reply.

How did you clean it, did you remove it and cleaned it or have you just sprayed some cleaner into TB when car was running?

Please reply, thanks

The directions to do so are usually on the can of TB cleaner. Basically you remove the the accordian section (resonator) from the TB, spray the TB cleaner on the plate, and scrub with a clean towel. You may also clean inside by turning the lever on the TB to open the plate. Your engine might take a couple cranks to turn over, but its normal and it should fire up.

I had sort of a similar problem this morning. I warmed up my car for approximately 10 minutes and when I put it into gear, it just died on me. It did this about 5 times so I just decided to walk to school. It works fine now but I don't want this to be a reoccuring problem.

Hey guys you might want to consider replacing the engine wireing harness. I had so many problems. The car would stall when going into gear. It would start up bad. It was crazy. I checked codes and it was telling me the maf was messed up. Went to a buddy's shop, changed the maf. Same ****. Desided to try a wiring harness, and it all works bautifully now. Cost me $125 to swap it out.

HOLY CRAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I cannot believe it! My car starts like a champ now and the rough idle is totaly gone!!!! I have cleaned the throttle with an STP cleaner for like $2.50 and it fixed this problem. I have heard about the throttle cleaning but I have always thought that it was a "mechanic quick fix scam" but I guess it is not! When I was cleaning the throttle I saw that there is a lot of dirt beyond reach so I guess Ill take the intake off next summer and have it fuly cleaned.

Once again, thanks for hints and advices. Im a happy I30 owner again

regards, Bart.

skorpio, Can you do a quick n short write-up what and how you cleaned the TB ? Motorvate has one write-up but it's on slicing and dicing the entire TB to clean up. Did your car too took few cranks like ScreamingVE said before getting back to normal ?

My car did not want to start when was cold and no matter how many times I have cranked, it just refused to start. Only thing I could do to start it was to step on accelerator while cranking and revv the engine for few seconds.

Basically What I did was to remove the top air filer cover, than remove it from resonator. Next I have removed the resonator with the rubber housing that connects to the throttle body. When removed, you will se the throttle plate, the thing that accelerator pedal rotates. Next I have used STP throttle body cleaner and sprayed it on a clean shop rag used pliers to hold the throttle plate in open position and started to clean the dirt as far as I could. I have also cleaned the throttle plate itself. Thats it. Put it back together and I was amazed

I did not take any pictures as I did it in hurry because it was 28 degrees outside. But it is an easy job. 10 minutes and you will be done.

regards, Bart.
