Factory navigation system in a 2K I30 without factory navigation.

This may be old news but I´d thought i share what I have Done.
got an I30 Factory Nav system on Ebay a while back without the screen.
After hunting the screen down and not finding it I gave up and decided to install the gps with an aftermarket lcd.
I found a kit that was able to convert the RGB to Rca and was able to gt that part working.
As for the cables I was able to connect everything including the VSS and get everything working like a charm. If anyone is intrested with more info just let me know and I will post what I have found

Yeah, how much did it cost? I have an Alpine 6.5" screen, but the navi for it is around $1000. How much did everything cost besides the screen? Thanks.

The Factory nav was $160 and the rgb to composit converter was $60 and the screen was $80.00

And abunch of my time to figure out the connectors to match the factory nav.
As you know if you car was a non navigation model then you can´t add the fatory navigation after with out some mods.

I am very interested in this. Could you post pics? I found a navi on ebay but its the one that replaces the stock HU. Doesn't the 2000/2001 fit within that cubby hole on top of the clock? I would love to try this on my car. Also how did you get the antenna working?

The navi I found.. Correct or not?

I think that one is from the 99 I30, not the 2000+. I could be wrong but that's what it looks like to me.

I was lucky to buy the unit on ebay with part of the factory harness.
As for the mods I had to do I will list them below.

Rgb-Composit converter from http://www.jrok.com/hardware/RGB.html
This was necessary to convert the video out to a normal off the shelf lcd
Had to tap into the VSS
Had to ground 1 cable to fool the gps into thinking it was parked

The gps antenna was easy I picked up the plug from Radio Shack and soldered it to the radio then connected a slandered gps into it.

All this was made possible with the wirering diagram from an i30 with navigation and a subscription to www.alldatadiy.com.

Also just an FYI I removed this gps and installed an Eclipse avn2454.
I wanted to have built in DVD an mp3 player all in one unit.

I may post the old GPS on EBay.

Also I will post pics of the unit tomorrow along with close up´s of the mods made.

cheers

I was thinking of sticking a Alpine M770 with the new 872 nav into that pod over the clock. Thinking of how to fabricate it to be like the stock and move up and down. This set up would give me touchscreen control and 3 additional a/v RCA inpus for the screen. This is all if i end up with this 01 I30T im looking at right now

The new alpine nav had real time traffic reroutes and a bunch of other crazy features.

You all are aware that you've just responded to a thread written in 2005... right?

I installed the OEM Navigation system in my I35, so check this out if you're interested...
