Questions about 99 i30 Limited

Hey everyone, i just bought a 1999 i30 limited (stepping up from my 95 GLE that got wrecked a few months ago) and i've got a few questions (well maybe more than a few). First, i think i have the awesome 99 misfire thing going on. It feels like a thud when im waiting at a stoplight, kinda like a really hard shift but when im not moving. I haven't gotten a MIL yet so is there a way to see which cylinder it is or should i just wait for the light? Second, I have the whole infiniti communicator onstar thing in the car, and from what the dealer told me that system is dead so do you guys think (since the bose HU looks the same) i could put the 99 q45 steering wheel audio controls in place of the communicator ones? That would be awesome. As much as it is cool to hit the button with friends in the car and have the verizon lady come on, audio controls on the steering wheel would be MUCH more useful. Last, how hard would it be to put heated seats in my car? I'm thinking about just getting the elements and switches from a junkyard b/c i dont want to lose the seats with the infiniti logo on the middle (unless they all come with that). How hard would it be to rip apart the seat and put in the elements? Well i think that's enough for today, thanks for reading my book...

With all the appropriate parts, you could install heated seats in about a week end. You will be removing the leather from the foam and then re hog ringing it back on, so you will need a hog ring puller and hog rings. You will need the switches, heating element (not sure if you can get that seperate from the foam or not), thermostat, and wiring and connectors.

Thanks for the quick reply. So are hog rings are what hold the leather together at the bottom and they need to be taken off to put the element in? And about the misfiring, do you think i'd be better off replacing all the coils, or waiting until the MIL comes on? Unless there's a way that the computer can store a misfire code without turning the light on, in which case i would need to pull the codes. Sorry for al these questions but i'm really loving this new car and want to keep it in good shape. BTW your grill looks AWESOME!

I haven't seen any decks that can control iPods, did you see this somewhere? As for the steering wheel controls you might be able to get an adapter that will hook up to the steering wheel controls that will act as a remote (placed under the steering wheel facing your deck). When you hit your steering wheel controls the adapter sends the proper signal to your deck via the little remote. I saw this on a 5th gen max I believe.

About the misfiring, the only thing I can think of is a bad coil, especially since you are 99 model year. If it occurs all the time, then, with the car idleing, disconnect a coil and listen for the misfire. If it gets worse, then that coil is good. Reconnect it and go to the next one and do the same thing. Once you remove a coil(s) that do not effect the idle, then you know that they are the bad ones. I hope this makes sence.

Ohh, and thanks about the grill!

Yeah that idea makes sense, thanks. I think i'll try it out tomorrow. Actually if the GD for 4th gen coils works out i may just go ahead and swap out all six, b/c im sure they'll all go bad eventually. About the steering wheel controls, i dont think we need adapters (with the stock HU) b/c it seems like the q45 and i30 HUs are the same, so the steering wheel audio controls from the Q should hook up to ours. If anyone has the FSM for the i30 and q45 see if you can find the wiring for both stereos and see if the Q's controls can hook into ours. That would be awesome and i'd definetly give up the phone controls for it.

Thanks, thats pretty tight I never knew that existed. Too bad I have an older Alpine deck. I'm gonna have to buy a new one soon after seeing that.

Speaking of ipods, is there some kinda splitter for the cd changer cable so I could keep my cd changer hooked up and have an the ipod hooked up on the other one, and be able to switch between the two?
