Auto-Dimming Mirror Help!

Hey guys, I own a '97 Maxima with the standard mirror, and I recently upgraded to a 95-99 I30 auto-dimming mirror (without compass). The only problem is that I don't really know where/what to run these wires to. Here is a picture of the harness from the mirror. Can anyone help me out?

Thanks guys,

-Maurice

P.S. - I have a similar thread going in the 4th gen Maxima forum. You may view it here: http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=391725

Thank you so much for the very useful diagram. Sadly, even the schematic requires some clarifying for me. This is what I have derived from what you posted.

From what I've collected, that would be the schematic representation of the harness, however, once I run the wires from those points, I get a little confused when they reach those junctions in the schematic. For example, what do the round circles mean? What are those M10-R1 symbols...ah damnit, I just can't follow schematic diagrams.

I am not sure if this will help or be of no use, but I took out my 96 I30 auto dim mirror and replaced it with an auto dim with digital compass. The OEM mirror was mounted to my roof and the new mirror mounts to the windshield.

The wires for the OEM mirror (like you said) have 4 wires, but the new mirror only had 2 in order for it to work properly (ground and power) I ran the wires in the headliner, down the windshield post ( is that what it's called?) and then under my dash and used my clock power for (power) and then grounded it to a screw behind the stereo/AC controlls.

I am curious why the OEM mirror has 4 wires, but less features and the new mirror I got with more features has only 2 wires to make everything work?? That seems weird to me, but I agree that it is true.

I completely understand what you are talking about with the 4 wires in the OEM mirror though. I actually just shipped mine off to someone who has a Maxima and wants to do this mod this weekend. I cut the original 4 wire harness off my car to send to him as well. I think Nissan is just messing with us ALL!!!!!! LOL

Well, good luck with the install. I love the auto dim features on these mirrors.

Wow, atleast you understood that Diagram. I can't even make heads or tails out of it. I could not live without the Auto-dim feature. I hate driving cars without it. I laugh when people High Beam me cuz it doesn't do a damn thing, but make me brake on them while laughing. I agree with the Doc though, as I will soon be doing exactly what he did and WHY the OEM Nissans have 4 wires instead of only 2 is beyond me.

Anyway, good luck. Hope it ain't too much of a pain in the ***.

Thank you all for being so understanding. It seems as if the Infiniti forum is a lot more mature than the 4th gen Maxima forum. I was not aware of the newer mirrors with the built-in digital compass. I would have loved to get my hands on one of those Power and ground seems doable even for a like me. Maybe I'll try selling this one to a fellow Maxima owner, and try to be the newer one. Again, thank you all for the support.

Sincerely,

Maurice

Does this mean you no longer require any assistance?

Well, I wouldn't mind knowing where these wires go, even if it's just to help out whoever I'll be selling it to - unless it's too much of a pain for you to explain. Thanks!

just got done installing mine. i had the regular non-compass auto dimmer...4 wires. ran black to ground, orange/yellow to a light source (i used the ashtray) and blue/green to a switched 12v source (cig lighter). i left the blue/red unconnected and it works perfectly fine.

hardest part is running the wires under the headliner and down the a-pillar.

hope that helps a bit.
