its insanely loud at part to full throttle...but you can actually feel all the torque hidden in it...

what does the underside of the airbox and resonator look like? i would like to cut a 3" hole in the underside of the box and put a pipe that extends to the inner fenderwell. it would perform just like one of those tube style CAIs but would appear stock .

i dont want an exposed filter in my engine bay. i want to keep it stealth mode. i am gonna take my box apart after work today and see what i can come up with. im gonna see if i can take a black abs pipe and weld it to the bottom/ side of the box depending on where the hole in the sheet metal is. best part is.....almost free!--dave

ok. i took my box apart. by hacking it do you mean removing the fresh air inlet/resonator from the inside portion of the bottom of the airbox?

i took about 85% of the bottom section...you know with the three screws on it...the one part of the stock intake system that bolts on the chassis...i sawed off the whole bottom section of that and left the part that holds the filter in...so the actual drop in filter is exposed and secured

Hacked air box is by drilling or cutting chunks off of the intake box, if you want a sleeper mode airbox, just drille many holes into the underside and or the side closest to the fender. It lets the car suck up alot more air, though it might be a bit warmer than the outisde air. I'm only going to drille maybe.. 5 holes into the side of the box and leave the stock Ram Air/CAI piping in place so at high speed, (highway speeds) I dont lose power. I dont go above 50 on the road, so I dont bother racing on the road. Highway speeds are a whole different world.

I am planning on doing a mod with the stock air box that will pump lots of air into it from the outside. In fact, I've been working on this idea for awhile -- the hold-up is that I need to see, from an engineering standpoint, exactly how to maximize air flows in and out of it.

I posted a note on the 4th Gen Max board asking if anyone had a schematic of the entire stock intake system, but all they could suggest was to remove the box.

Not very helpful.

I guess that what it will come down to is for me to do a lot of mock-ups first, and then conduct some wind-tunnel like experiments to check out the design.

Stay tuned!

Exactly how much louder is it? Between my Y-Pipe and Muffler, I first hated my cars new sound but it has grown on me and I sorta, well...like it, maybe even love it now. Not sure how much this mod would increase my sound, but I def. would want to do it if the performance increases nicely. Any clips or flix?

there is a product out there that is basically the same thing as solder except its plastic. its used to repair bumpers, moldings, or anything plastic really.

There was a thread a little while ago in the 4th gen forum comparing many aftermarket intakes and stock intakes with dyno results on the same car (sorry no link,) but it basically showed that nothing beat the stock airbox until above the 4000RPM range when some of the intakes were slightly better, but for all low-end below that (which is how I personally drive) the stock box is the better choice...

My airbox is hacked as well, and love I love it... I removed just the side facing the fender so it wouldn't directly suck in hot air off the engine block.

1. Take off airbox
2. Cut hole, or cut out sections of airbox with dremel
3. Put airbox back in car
4. Grin with new sounds from engine bay

yes

yes it does i floor it so it kicks down right next to people while they are walking and they just give me evil stares. im not kidding you it sounds like a truck. plus at highway speeds around 55-65 it keeps pulling and about 80 it just feels like that the engine can keep going but i got pulled over for going 50 in a thirty so im kinda screwed six months probo. and 21 days suspension of license owell completed it in march. all i can say is .........I didnt do it.

I love it cutting up your air box, great idea,NOT! I think Nissan knows what they are doing don't mess with a good thing. But yeah cut some pieces out it might sound cool but cmon Dyno results would make everyone put the pieces back in.
