99SE rack in a 97 I30T???

I've read in other forums and posts that upgrading the rack from their stock one to the 99SE rack improved the steering response on their vehicles. I just want to be sure before I go through with this that this will work for my vehicle.

Can it be done? Is there anyone here who has done it on their I30? Were there or are there any install issues that you came across? Noticeable difference or should I just stay with the stock rack?

I have to get this done pretty soon, so any info would help.

Uh oh... Naja, um....I need to know why you're changing out your rack please.

Is it leaking? Knocking? ...or are ther other issues I need to watch for?

If you do it yourself, do let me know the degree of difficulty - and if you'd do it again yourself... TIA

Both boots on rack busted and they've been that way for a while. Plus I've been wanting to change to the 99SE rack if it is worth the effort.

Can it be done? Anyone here done it? I’m ordering the rack tomorrow, so it looks like I might be the first.

No one here has done it, but if the other A32 guys in the 4th gen forum have done it, then it can be done.

Sorry for digging up an old post, but I have a 98 I30t and my rack has been leaking.

2 Questions:

1) Now that I need a replacement, I've heard that the 99SE rack is a better rack. I've attached the link for the part I was going to order. One supplier said it would not fit and another supplier said it would. Any confirmation?

2) This may be a stupid question but would I need to order a new steering pump also?

Thanks for any input you may be able to provide.

Why would you order a new PS pump? You don't need one unless...you need one, really.

IIRC it was only the OEM rack that was supposed to be 'tighter'.

FWIW FAST shows the '97-99 SE racks to all be the same, with all non SE racks ('95-99) using a different rack.

I have an OEM(key word being OEM) 99 rack in my 96.

Well it def. feels tighter and better.. but then again keep in mind my OEM 96 rack was leaking and it was in terrible condition. SO anything would be an improvement.

I am in the process of upgrading to the rack that has the solenoid built into it to adjust the steering assist at higher speeds. So i can have somewhat of a SPEED sensitive steering.

or electric steering pump... (this looks like a possiblity) toyota MR2's use an electric steering pump..
