Fuel injector cleaning fluid

I was recommended to use a fuel injector cleaning fluid because I get bad gas mileage. Is this a sound idea, anyone used it? If you did, or know which one is the best, please do recommend.

Thank you in advance !

It is not a sound idea. Check the fluid section for better info for what product to use.As for you bad gas milage, there is a stickie that will walk you thru problem source.

Off the top of my head:
Check codes (maybe KS)
check/change sparks
check/change air filter
check/add air to tires.

will it harm the engine or something. I've checked the Fluid section, didn't find anything, most of it is on oil.

To correct my statement, a fuel injector cleaner is a good idea, but thinking that , that alone would cure your bad fuel consumption was the "not sound" part.

I am not sure which injector cleaner produces the best effect, but I'd try any credible company and their product. Try lucas or redline as Tim96I30t is suggesting. Or the chevron gas stations have a treatment that you can add, as your pumping your gas, I've heard people trust that as well.

Good luck.

i got Lucas today, it happens that on top of cleaning injectors it also cleans valve seats and lubes cylinders. now is this something that has to be done every 3000K miles as suggested on some of the labels I’ve read?

I'd say every 3-6 months with the "in the tank" stuff. It doesn't do much, at least compared to a direct tap fuel induction service. I wouldn't waste the money on every 3k miles.

"Direct tap fuel induction" is this the fuel injector cleaning found at Firestone and places like that? I never cleaned mine with anything other than w/ lucas, is this direct tap needed, what does it involve?

I'm not sure what Firestone offers. Most shops will have this, they tap in the fuel rail, or nearest available area, and run a pressurized fluid from entry point through the injectors. This procedure is used most when 30-60k has been reached. It is also done when stumbling idle is detected.

For someone who is haveing mileage issues, it certainly can't hurt.

My mech. told me to use the whole bottle with 6-7 gallons in my tank for a more concentrated mix. The label says I should fill up the whole tank. Will it do more harm then good if I do it the way my mechanic is telling me to do it? By the way i bought a diffirent cleaner, Chevron....

Chevron's "Techron" comes highly recommended by many. I doubt that running that ratio of cleaner/fuel once or twice is going to cause any harm. I remember reading on this once, where some cleaners if not dilluted properly could harm some fuel delivery components.

Go for it, it wont hurt. Let us know after finishing the tank how it goes.

*Caution*
Too much concentrated fuel injector cleaning fluid in the tank may "melt" the seal inside the fuel injector.

The test has been done if you wanna prove it.. you can throw in a piece of rubber into the fuel injector cleaning fluid.. and that piece of rubber may be gone in about a week.....

nuts.... so should i go with half a tank just to be safe? or maybe use as originally planned and go drive for a few hours on the highway to burn it up so it won't seat in my tank.

If the directions say full tank I would go with a full tank. I see why they say put a full tank, because if you dont put enought, your rings will get eaten up in no time. A Full tank must dilute it to a point that its safely running, and eating up any crap in the system.

Its free to follow direction, but could be expension and time consuming to replace injector rings on all 6 injectos.

You are right, after all he's a mechanic, maybe looking for some extra visits from me. But then again when i asked him if he could clean my injectors in the shop, he recommended to use liquid fuel injector cleaner first and see if it helps. Anyways, all people i know who tried it as directed say there was absolutely no difference.

Thanks everybody for your replies, I appreciate it.
