2002 I35, Odor after AC is off

Guys,
Do you have suggestions on the procedure of odor removal (I guess mildew) from the vent system. When AC is off the first several minutes the smell is bad.

Thank you for your ideas.

Change your in-cabin filter, located in glovebox.

Thanks, I read the other posts that it does not actually helps to remove the odor. I think the odor is from the mildew, where moisture is. Did you have the odor that you actually eliminated by replacing the cabin filter?

My AC actually does not have that strong a smell, and when it does once in a blue moon, I turn on the AC with NO recirculation and it's gone.

is it better to use recirculation for AC. I've noticed it's cooler and fan speed is faster when i use it.

But then you recirculate moisture, moisture in the vents create mildew. Blowing fresh cold DRY air = no mildew, just start with fresh air, then recirculate after a few min.

Do you have any techniques in actually removing the odor? I think as soon as mildew formed, it will smell, no matter what you do. The idea is actually somehow to kill the mildew, but I don't know any means to access the area (without dissambling half of the car). Does anyone now?

A nice trick is to run Lysol through the induction vents.

1) Grab a can of your favorite Lysol
2) Run the A/C at the highest fan speed
3) Position the can nossle at the induction vents
4) Spray until you are basically out of Lysol or when you feel its good

This should help kill off any mildew inside the vents. I do this every once and awhile to freshen up the vents and kill anything inside. Works like a charm and costs a few dollars.
