So it's been a long time
So it's been a long time since i've posted, unfortunately i've been swamped at work and school. Well since my mishap with the alternator, i took two measures, i replaced the alternator and i replaced the battery. The alternator is a Bosch Reman and the battery a yellow top deep cycle. Now my question remains, why did the alternator fail so suddenly? Here's a theory that i've been playing with, i think that since i hardwired the Maxima HIDs straight into the factory wires for power usage only the overwhelming amount of current that they drew through the battery overwhelmed it and hence sent the alternator into overtime for a few days to keep the car running. I am working on a harness with relays to hopefully rule out this probability. I don't have anyother hard core aftermarket installs, sadly this was the first. I do have a bright white domelight but thats about it that has been changed. Before i get too far into the whole thing, i just want to hear what you guys have to say. Thanks for any input that you may have. Oh and happy early Fourth of July to you all. Peace.
35 looks and no ideas as to what im talkin aobut?! hahah aight it's str8 i'll assume that this post was just long and boring...
to sum it up with some notes....
- Installed Stock Max HIDs
- Alternator & battery die
- Replaced both
- Wondering if the current drawn by the HIDs was the culprit
peace

Alternators just sometimes die. I'd guess that when the alternator started to go bad it no longer generated electricity, and as such the battery wasn't charging. Thus, the electricity was being pulled from the battery and nothing was going back in and it died (or would have died) too.
As for the HIDs, I'd say there's a good chance your factory wiring's not up to the large amount of current drawn at start up by the ballasts/igniters.
Try a wiring harness complete with relays and see if it helps. I'd go that route before trying anything else. I'd go that route if I ever retrofitted HID on a halogen equipped car anyway.

HID has a super large power spike when started (this is where it's possible to fry your factory harness). Running HID actually use less power than a regular halogen bulb after the initial start.
Maybe it's just the pic, but did you use d2r bulbs from a Max? Looks like alot of glare from that pic, especially for a daytime pic.
Sounds like you just had a bad alternator.
Wiring harness w/relays is the way to go.

Yeah i used the D2r bulbs off of the maxima. When i did the swap, i didn't think to minimize the glare with the maxima bulb cover that blocks out the bottom half of the beam therefore i just closed em up. I do have a huge glare thing goin on but i'll get around to doing that when i paint the heads and re-waterproof one headlight. Aright guys thanks for the replies. I do plan on getting that harness done very VERY soon. Aright peace. Oh STLI30 just to let you know, i used your page when i cleared otu my corners hahah very helpful hows your projector retrofit going?
I was hoping to have the retrofit finished this weekend as I had a few days off work. I ordered some CCFL angel eyes, but two of the rings are too big, so smaller ones are on order. Hopefully next weekend I'll finish it off, FINALLY. lol
Also ordered the cefiro chrome headlight trim. Thinking about painting the lights black with the chrome trim. We'll see when the trim gets here though.

On the other hand, I'm afraid I'll see it, like it, and feel like there's something else I need to spend money on.
