Alternative to in-dash NAV

For those that need a NAV but don't want to buy a whole new head-unit. You can add Tom-Tom Navigator 6 to your PDA or PDA cell phone and you'll have a handheld GPS with voice guidance and detailed maps. It even shows points of interest like gas stations. An added benefit would be that you could use it in whatever car you drive also.

Yeah, the portable units have gotten so cheap and so good I think it makes more sense these days to buy those rather than an in-dash unit.

The TomTom & Garmin's are really cool NAVs, but the screens are so small! However, they're several thousand dollars cheaper than going with the integrated NAV.

the MAIN difference between the portable navs and the integrated navs is that if you lose signal you're screwed. In a city with a lot of tall builidings or a rural area..the portable units will not work. However, the integrated ones are hooked up to your vehicle's VSS wire so it can predict where you're going even if you don't have signal. Just something to think about....

Maps work well also and are very cheap now days. Sorry, just had to throw that out there. I found that even when i got the software for my PDA that I did not use it enough to get it as an option on my car. Basically, I just don't travel enough I guess.
