What makes an I35 "prewired" for XM?
Is it just the headunit or is there something more involved? I'd love to have XM integrated into my HU instead of using a seperate unit like I am now. Basically I'm trying to figure out if I can get my I30 wired up for XM.

First and foremost, the head unit needs to be SAT-ready to do what you want to do. IIRC, there were press releases from Infiniti saying that the 2003 and/or 2004 model year I35s could be had SAT-ready.
From there, all you'd need is the correct tuner and cable to connect the tuner to the head unit.
That said, I've *never* seen an I35 with a Sat-ready head unit. Doesn't mean it doesn't exist...I've just never seen one. I imagine it'd be like the other Infiniti vehicles at the time with a SAT button on it or something similar.
Truthfully, though, I think you'd be much happier with a PnP or aftermarket head unit with a tuner. The factory integrated units that didn't display through nav screens were pretty frustrating. One line of text, didn't scroll (usually), and would only display one category at a time. I have a Sirius tuner attached to my Kenwood DDX7015, and while I like it, I'm really more jealous of the Starbase I installed in my fiancee's Mazda3 - much faster, displays more info, and more user-friendly.

Yeah what I have now for XM is similar to the Starbase. It's great but it would be nice to have everything right in front of me.

I'd like to be able to put something like this in, but I can't figure out what they changed after VIN #112061. The page says a VIN lower than this is incompatible with the kit.

My *guess* is that it'll only work with the compatible head unit - one with an input on the rear of the HU for the tuner to connect and/or a SAT button. And that probably only came on the I35s with the VINs specified.
The tuner kit there says that it comes with all associated hardware - my question would be whether it came with the cable to connect the tuner to the head unit.
IIRC, when the G35s first came out, there was an issue over whether the cars were pre-wired for the sat tuner - and I think that it really boiled down to whether they had the cable installed already or not. May be a similar situation.
Again, this is mostly conjecture, but seems plausible.
