Why did I ever buy and Infiniti ...

I ask myself that question every time I see a car I like.

Acura TL ... Infiniti M35 ... '07 G35 ...

Unfortunately, all roads lead back to the Infiniti.

What do you think of trading in an '01 I30 with 120K with $9K still owed on it, to purchase an '04 upgraded model for somewhere around $16 - $18 with 39K miles.

I like the I30, but I love the I35.

It's too much money to turn the I30 into and I35, and the upgrades I have planned for the I30, can be done on the 35

I wouldn't, you still owe $9,000 on the I30. Pay that off first.....

pay off that i30 then trade it in and step up (i35,m35/45,g35/37).

The extra power of the I35 isn't such an earth-shattering difference that I'd take on more debt to have it.

I just put a deposit on my new G37. Pull the trigger. Do it now! You won't regret it.

Hang on to your I30. Save your money and get a new G35X or the new EX35 later on in your life. I currently have an I35 and although I am getting the itch to upgrade (won't be selling my car though, I think I will just give it to my parents) I always find myself asking, damn, I should spend my money on something that I can get a return on..(ie: stocks/mutuals/etc)

Thanks to all who replied ... I agree with you Uber, but when you already do that, what do you do!!

What good is mutual funds and stocks, if you put all you money into them, and can't get the things you want until you are 55!!!

I'm weighing the possibilities, but wont make a rush decision. The wife asked, "Why not keep the car, if you're going to get the the same car again."

Good points

I just paid off my I35. I was content with it for a while though everyone tells me, "It just isn't you" becuase I have always had more sporty or more powerful cars. I really let that bother me for a while but the bottom line is that I do not have a car payment at the moment. I went as far as looking at an 08 Trailblazer SS (hot rod SUV) and back at the subaru dealer to check out the Legacy GT. The legacy makes more sence to me since I still have a bunch of Suby parts from my WRX but I like having some money right now. Besides that, I think the wife would dig out my 44 and let me have it if I got rid of my I35 right now. The itch is bad to dump it right now but I would rather have the itch than a hole in my head and an empty wallet!

Just do a few of the mods you were planning to the I30 and pay that thing off. You will be happy in the long run. It is never worth being upside down going into another car. If you are like me, in another year or two you will see something else you really want and then you will be in an even bigger hole.

Hold on to the I30, and get a g35 later on. As others said I wouldent get an I35 because I dont find it too much of an upgrade over what you currently have, especially if you are gonna take on more debt doing it.

That sounds like the way I used to be. You better listen to your wife and either find one car that can satisfy you or do something to take your mind off cars all together. Whenever you go from looking at a expensive, gas guzzling hot rod SUV to looking at a new Subaru, you obviously don't know what you want. It's a waste of money to be honest. I did the same thing. One day I wanted economical Civic EX "because I commute so much it would be good for me" to the next week I was like "I don't want to get my butt whooped everytime some joker wants to pull on me" which would have me looking at turbo Subarus. I even had the pre-approval from from the Credit Union when I accidentally found a wrecked 2004 I35 (I was ALSO looking at 2004+ Infiniti's cause most are pretty fast) on Craigslist. My wife hates the way I love cars but she was relieved to see me give up on buying a new one. So I just bought the wrecked 2004 and swapped all the parts into our old girl 97 Maxima SE. Honestly, I am happier this way. I got my car fix big time, saved alot of money and have a fun car now. With no car payments! I am not suggesting this same route to OP, but I do suggest avoiding car payments if at all possible! Nothing wrong with the I30, so why get rid of it? Pay it off then figure something else out.

MattB85, yes the power is a big difference. Some people, myself included think that part of the "luxury" car equation is good power under the hood. A few years back when I was buying a SUV, I drove both the VG33 Pathfinder and QX4, the VQ35DE QX4, a 2001 I30 and a 2002 I35. Seriously the VQ35 made both the QX4 and the I35 a whole different animal IMO. I ended up buying a 2002 QX4.

Keep the I30 and save your money. If you got a wife and have outstanding payments, avoid falling into the 'wants' pit b/c it is never ending. Unless you can afford to buy or lease a new car every 4-5 years when they are redesigned and ‘improved’. Besides, if you think about it, what do new cars have? styling fad and horsepower… A car is a car is a car. Most important is you have the car that suites your needs.

Btw, you can withdraw your money from a mutual fund or stock investment as quick as you like (both are technically risky investments) and there are no penalties.

Keep the I30

My plan for now is run my 98 I30 until it literally wont run anymore.

I've been all over as well, looked at subies, Z's, G35's, everything.

I cant get rid of this car, its been too good to me, its plenty fast unless you're on a track or out to prove something to people... niether of which i am when i think about it.

It drives like new with 110k miles on it, doesnt burn a drop, and i know enough about it to keep it runnning like a top until the body falls apart (rochester NY salted roads will eventually get to it)

In the near future it will likely get, new suspension, and in a few years it may get some serious body work to make her look like new, but its too good of a car to drop
