Can I use regular gas instead of premium?

Regular VS Premium
Ummm Is everyone forgetting 10 to 1 compression ratio? 
Most cars dropped to 8 or 9 to one. (non turbo and supercharged ) Old and some newer hi performance cars were once 10.5 / 11 and even 12 to one. The rating does matter.
If your knock sensor is retarding timing don't that tell you something?
If you were to hear your engine without the Sensor you would not be asking
if it's Okay to use regular fuel.
