FM static

It could be connections getting dirty. It could be the antenna amplifier module in the pillar between the rear window and rear door on the passenger side of the car going bad. Or it could be the head unit itself.
Unfortunately I don't know how to test any of these parts besides swapping it out and seeing what happens.

Other than saying it could, I'm not able to give you a definite answer because I don't know the circuit design inside the amplifier.
If it is one amplifier circuit for both am and fm signals, both would be degraded at the same time. But because of the difference in the actual am and fm signals, I bet that each band has its own amplifier. Also, the electrical characteristics of the am and fm signals make them travel through the air differently. This has the effect of making the am signal easier to receive when conditions deteriorate.
