04 I35 @ 123K miles == Thrown Rod???
Infiniiti forum Newb here, but I've been lviing in the Ford Superduty forums for almost 10 years and have done all my own diesel maintenance on my '02 F250 and '03 Excursion, both of which have the legendary 7.3's. That said, I can certainly turn a wrnech or two, but difference circumstances have me in a position where I'm just not up to what appears to be the current task at hand on my daughter's I35.
I have an '04 I35 which we bought last August when it had 106K miles. A week and a half ago, my daughter called me and was stranded on the interstate. The car made a loud noise and she lost power. Had it towed to a local (reputable) shop, and I'm told that it has a thrown (or slung, broken, etc.) rod, and that they can hear it knocking when they hand turn the engine. The engine will barely start.
Questions...
1) This is certainly not a common situation from all the reading I've done, and this vehicle was a replacement for another '04 I35 which my daughter had driven for 5 years (roughly 65K miles worth of road time). Aside from using oil, which I know is not an uncommon scenario, the vehicle was trouble free (both, in fact). I know nothing, however, of the way the engine and oil was taken care of in the car's first 106K miles of life. Can someone confirm/deny the commonality of this scenario we are now in?
3) Are there any other potential issues which would lead to these same symptoms?
2) The body and leather interior is in excellent condition with no damage, and it's very clean. Assuming it really is a rod, I'm thinking about trying to get $1500 "as is" for someone who can and wants to do an engine swap. Does that seem reasonable or excessive? We paid $4800 for the vehicle, and my thinking and reading indicates to me we could still get over $4000 for it even with a used engine swap. I have local guys who will swap it for about $1100, and can get a used engine delivered for about $1300. That's how I get to asking $1500 for it as is. Let me know if you think I'm crazy or on track.
Thanks for the input ahead of time.

I'm going to cancel my account. I came here looking for advice from knowledgeable Nissan/Infiniti owners, but I can only conclude that the folks in this forum either do not know enough to answer my simple questions or don't care about new members who are looking for their "wisdom". Both of these potential scenarios are a HUGE departure from what I've experienced in other automotive-related forums where the members are much more engaged and helpful.

i think your thread would see more traffic in the 5th gen maxima forum, the infiniti sections are pretty dead and it is more or less the same car as the 02-03.
what was the oil level like when it died? the early vq35de was known to eat oil and when they eat too much i think that's when a lot go bye bye, tho i don't think thrown rods are too common.
judging from what i see on craigslist, i think $1000-$1500 as is would be a fair range for a car in good shape that doesn't run.
