Removing dash vents: how?

How does one remove these vents from the dash? Mine Are kinda cruddy and sticky and i want to clean 'em up...

Or... does anyone have a photo of the dash or one of these vents removed? If I could see how they connect in there (or what they connect TO) I could figure out how to safely remove them.

They are screwed on from the back side. You will have to remove the dash to remove them.

The first time I took a dash off, it took me several hours because I didn't know where all the screws, nuts and bolts were. The second time was less than an hour. Not a hard job, just time consuming.

Aww geez, are you kidding me? Ugh.

Looks like I'm sliding strips of paper towels in there and spraying hot water in there to try to un-gum up the mechanisms!

I hope you have success. The vents in my 2000 Maxima would stick in the summer but not winter. In fact, when I brought the thing in the house and it cooled down, it moved fine. I guess at 100º+ the plastic expands and binds.

I experimented with my center dash vents because they were easy to remove. I first tried lubricating them, but that didn't work all that well. Then I tried sanding them, doing just a little at a time. Because I was taking the vent apart many time in this trial and error process, I eventually broke the vent. Got a junk yard replacement. It would bind in the heat, too, but I gave up and left it alone.
