Is it worth a new motor

I have an 04 i35 as we all know they burn oil? I would like to keep the car if I can put a newer year with low miles in it. What is the best years to look for an engine that will be a direct swap with minimal work

Jr's I35 with 132K goes through 3/4 QT of oil per gas tank. Still runs fine, No CEL. Using OEM PCV valve, AddW1 catch can and running Penzoil 10W-40 high milage dino oil. No noticeable valve cover gasket leaks, no lower or upper oil pan leaks. Front spark plugs tubes are free of oil. Debating a 2nd gen swap as well since the car has clean title and it's rust free.

Thanks for info I’m definitely looking into dropping a better engine in. Also what about the trans is there anything I can do to ensure reliability like the engine

Contrary to popular belief, those 4-speed auto transmission are pretty reliable as long it is not abused and properly maintained. My old 97 SE had over 237K on the original auto tranny last time I checked the Carfax. I installed new shift solenoids ($150) part and auxiliary transmission oil cooler.

There are other mods such as improved valve body and others, do a search on the 4th and 5th Gen forums.

depends how long you want to keep the car and if it's nice and rust free, I see cars for sale that have had a hard life and are worth maybe 200$ in scrap sitting on dealer lots for 5000
if you want a decent engine you should go remanufactured, but it's going to be expensive + shipping and installation + tax

He needs to check the back three spark plug chambers for oil. My i35 had oil in one chamber like plum full almost and it was because whoever had the car before didn’t tighten down the spark plug in cylinder 5 to spec. Fixed that and never had another issue
