HELP! Why did the engine blow? Best replacement?

Hey guys,

I jumped on this forums because I need a little help! And I know there is the 'Search' button, but I am a little confused as to what exactly I am looking for. So please bare with me!

I myself is a Honda/VW enthusiast, and have done rebuilds and swaps to that nature in the past. So I am pretty technical and not too noobish. However, I am not to knowledgeable when it comes to Nissans/Infinitis. Given this, here is my problem:

My g/f's roomate has an Infiniti I35 either a 2003 or 2004, ( I have yet to see the car up front, so I dont know the vin). The motor blew while driving on the highway. She towed it to a shop, and verified that it indeed can not be fixed.

With that being said, what is common for a stock motor like vq35de to just 'blowup' ? She said she changes her oil every few thousand miles, but has not done any extensive service to the motor.

Additionally, if she wants to put another used/newish motor in the car, what year vq35 would be able to swap? Would a JDM motor work?

Please help as we need some guidance here!

-Michael

Picture of the car should be on this post as well.

they normally dont just blow. they will make noises then blow.

i blew my vq35de in my 04 maxipad. but it was making noises on the way to a work thing (like 50 miles away) then blew up on the way home. It still ran, but zero power.

It apparently just blew and then the car stalled on the highway and could not even turn over. Still not sure what is wrong, but once again the mechanic verified that it is not working.

My guess is she likely ran very low on oil. The 3.5's have oil burning issues

So, what motor can I replace it with. Meaning is there a JDM motor, or specific year? Anyone have any idea on this?

Well any model infiniti from 2001-2004 should fit as those models have a vq35 in them. The 02-03 nissan maxima engines should be the same, so those may work too.

No, the Infiniti vrsion is a RWD design, so that would be extensive in nature (block has a different bolt pattern).

Any 02-08 motor will work. (FWD Base, so Altima/Maxima/Quest/Murano).

Another vote for the motor ran low on oil. Not that it matters now but you can pull the dipstick and see if it's dry.

I35 ain't rear wheel ... it's a Maxima in a tux.

For all intents and purposes, you get this gist though but I don't consider an I30/I35 an Infiniti. G's and M's yes, not I's.

Isn't a G35 just a 350Z for a more mature crowd? Same idea. The only truly unique Infinitis (to me anyway) are the G sedans. There is no Nissan equivalent. Not outside of Japan anyway. 4 door, rear wheel drive, with the option to bang gears if you want.

My guess would be the car ran low on oil also, gotta check it on these cars regularly. Any engine 3.5 will fit long as its fwd from a maxima, I35, altima murano, quest, And I35 is an infiniti, just like lexus es/ toyota camry,

The cats likely claimed another victim. I saw an I35 on CL last week with a blown motor. Went and looked at a majestic blue maxima a while back (blown motor of course, but dude's wife hit too much ****).

Yeah pretty reliable motor so far i have an 02 I35. I check oil regulary almost everyday, and check more frequently when driving it hard or on the highway alot.

When I said any infiniti, I was implying any infiniti I35.

If you ask me, anyone who runs their motor low enough to blow deserves it. Checking and adding/changing your oil are one of the most basic and essential maintenance services on a car.

Its amazing how sensitive these cars are now days that they kinda tell you exactly what is wrong with the car. If i didnt have my own scanner id be running crazy lol. If you take your car in for repairs and someone tries to tell you one thing, that check engine light and code reader comes right in handy.

Wouldn't you see the low pressure light come on before it blew?

Not necessarily. No lights or symptoms when mine blew from the cats (unless you count barely running a symptom lol).

I had changed the oil 1k earlier and it was not burning, so in 1k it went from excellent condition to shot.

Buuuut, people still ignore all the warnings on here.
