98 Black Maxima 5-speed SF or LA California

I'm selling my 98 5-speed that is a gxe with black exterior, grey interior. As with most maxima owners on this site, I love the car and hate to sell it. I moved 3 blocks from work about a month ago and don't foresee driving it much in the future. I've owned it for 5 years and have done all appropriate maintenance.

The car has 180,000 miles, mostly highway (probably 80-90%).
The transmission and clutch were replaced in January 2009 and are practically new. The model year of the new transmission and clutch were 2000 and are better and stronger parts than 98. The 97-98 manual transmissions simply are not as strong. The engine runs very strong, so the new owner should feel pretty good about these three main components. As for the other components, I am not aware of any mechanical issues, it drives very well.

Upgrades:
Audio - Kenwood cd receiver (50wx4) with 4 new speakers hooked up to powerful sony amp and 10" sub with 400w amp, plus sirius sportster.
Injen Cold Air Intake
Warpspeed Y-pipe
Short Shifter
Front Strut Bar
Red Top Optima Battery
Diamond clear corners

The car is located in Santa Barbara,CA but spends time in SF and LA.

Snypa, you hit it on the nose, I couldn't bring myself to sell the car, it was as you said, priceless. However, I need to sell the car now as I need and am buying a car with all-wheel drive and will not have room for two cars.

I'll post pics this week once I figure out how (sorry, been a member for years and don't know how).

I omitted a couple of important facts about the car in the prior listing as they hadn't come to mind:

#1 The engine leaks oil. It doesn't drip, I just know this because I change the oil myself every 3,000 miles and there is less than 4.5 quarts of old oil. It has done this since I bought the car when it had 110K miles. It has not been an issue for me, however, I'd guess the engine life would be less than normal.

#2 There are paint chips on the front of the car and some of the back bumper is peeling. The wear on the front is more than typical, however, you'll see this with the pictures.

I really have no idea how much to ask for the car, so I'm going to ask $5,000 initially and post on craigslist at that amount and just reduce it as necessary until it's sold. Priority to maxima.org members though.

Thanks Nismos, good question. I tend to get approx 3.5 quarts out of it. As I mentioned it's a starting price. Please keep in mind you live in NJ and cars are cheaper there. I was considering flying out east to purchase my next car and drive it back cross country.

I simply went on craigslist for LA and Santa Barbara and made sure I was at least $1K below what any dealer was selling older models (95-96) for. Also checked out two dealerships in town and they were listing 4th gens between $6K and $7K, which made me believe that selling for $5K with stereo, upgrades, new parts, etc. would make up for it not being a dealer sale.

Anyway, if you have a useful comment about the price, please contribute, otherwise, good question.

I have to say being from PA I would guess the reason that cars in CA are more is because you guys don't get the winter and thus salt conditions that we do here EVERY year. That stuff plays havoc on undercarriages and sub frames. I have seen cars here that look great but don't pass inspection because of safety structural issues with the frames. If you ever do plan on buying a car here because it is cheaper please do yourself a favor and have it looked at by a mechanic (with no affiliation to the seller) and have the car put on a lift so you can look under it. Some cars will shock you sun catchers from CA when you look under them. Most of the time you get what you pay for no matter where you buy the car from. With that said I just wanted to warn you ahead of time so you didn't get scamboozeled on a car out here get it to CA and find out you are out that much money.

Thanks for the advice and congrats on your new purchase. I took another look through Craigslist bay area at similar models for sale and am quite comfortable with the current asking price. I did see a 2007 going for $2300, tempting...but probably not real. Most of the Maximas going for around 2200 are either earlier models, terrible colors, or basic ads, including an 87 listed for $2250. I've turned down two offers above your $2200 suggestion already, thanks again for the input.

Again asking $3750 or best offer.

I'll be in the Bay Area this weekend if anyone wants to check it out and make an offer, I currently do not have an asking price, as you might guess, I'd accept much less.
