The Winter Conversion

Just "winterized" the car. Winter wheels/tires (Blizzak LM22), roof rack, rubber trunk/floormats and some other things. Here's a couple pics if anyone is interested.

I like this one with the reflection

The LM22 is a v-rated winter tire made for cars on the autobahn. It's made to run all winter in dry/snow/ice/rain. You give up a little bit of snow/ice grip compared to the WS-50 since these are a bit harder and better in dry conditions, but its a good tradeoff. I run them November through February and last year they probably wore 20% (front) and 10% (rears). They handle about as good as most A/S tires in the same size.

what does the rubber trunk mat look like? I've always loved your car with the roof rack, it makes it look really rugged

Actually, i just finished today covering the custom wood trunk floor that I made to sit flat over my full-size 17x8" spare tire. I covered it with some cheap black replacement carpet from Wal-mart and then bought an SUV rubber trunk mat from WM also, and cut it to cover most of the carpeting (though it's just so my dirty ski boots and stuff doesn't get the carpeting dirty). I'll take some pics in a few...

EDIT: Here you go. Looks ok. Hopefully it will flatten out a bit, since it's wavy because it was rolled up.

eh...somewhat. I make sure to spray the suspension and undercarriage often during the winter.

Of course, in that pic I was there before the salt was. We did about 150 miles in that snow, that depth. Unplowed, and with no tracks. Basically we were making the "fresh tracks" on all of those roads. It was really light stuff and at some parts the wind had blown it into drifts that were spraying over the hood of the car as we went through it. Very fun!

I never get stuck. A heavy FWD car with snow tires is damn near unstoppable in even the deepest snow That, and 15 years of experience driving in snow on the way to ski trips means I know where I can and can't go.

if you get stuck in the snow when driving, you must not really be from Buffalo. My family's from Rochester and any of them would be very embarrassed if they ever got stuck in the snow

Damn, you have a great memory, I almost forgot about that! I can't find that thread any more - I think it was in 'weekend battles.' Drag race in the snow, FTW!!! IIRC it was an STi.

yeah, AWD doesn't do much good in the snow if you're rolling on UHP summer tires, haha....can you say "sideways slip"?

I did the wheels a bit early this year because my very-worn Proxes 4 in the rear (2 years old) were getting annoyingly loud. I replaced both rear wheel bearings before realizing it was the f-ing TIRES making the droning noise.

As much as i love the Proxes4, they get loud as hell when they're below 50% tread, that's for sure....

Put the Blizzaks on and am truly enjoying the silence. It's like I'm in a Lexus now, so quiet....

haha...I'm getting too old and breakable to MTB in the snow. Done it a few times with studded tires and let's just say you take some painful falls. When it snows, I'm out on the skis or snowboard
