Doesn't an open intake, like a k&n cone filter, invite the possibility of getting water in your engine?

Yes. One cannot guarantee no water will sieze the engine. Especially whan water can be injested by the stock intake also

Small amounts of water can enter the engine without doing any harm, but you drive through a flooded area with the intake in the water... then you're screwed.

If you're concerned about water ingestion with a CAI, install an AEM Air Bypass Valve. I wouldn't be too concerned about water ingestion with an HAI. If the water gets high enough to cover your HAI, you'll have plenty of other things to think about besides water ingestion . . . like surviving the experience, for instance.

Wrap it in a plastic bag secured with a rubber band.

Of course, this will keep out the air too.

It's a whole "risk vs reward" kind of proposition.

one member here tried it....he forgot to take off the plastic bag of the K&N filter and start the car when the plastic bag still wrapped around the filter.

Is there not a risk of getting water in the engine bay just in a rainstorm though?

Not enough to create a problem.

there's people who cover up their electronics and clean their engines with a garden hose, albeit at low pressure. i don't think you need to worry about water in the pipe.
