ignition coil overs
ignition coil overs
hi, do you guys know anything about ignition coilovers? my service engine light came on and i took my car to nissan. They looked it over and told me that i need to replace my ignition coilovers. there are 6 of them and they said that they are 150 each. so the total is 900 plus 130 labor which adds up to be 1130. dang... do you guys know anything about it? they said that i need to replace them because i dont get enuff spark when i start up my car. i dont even know how they went bad... as you guys can see, i dont know much about them. so if you guys can, please educate me. thanks,

I cant imagine any situation where youll have to change all the 6 ignition coils! Kinda impossible Sounds like hes trying to take advantage of ya. Try going to autozone for a free diagnostic to find out what kinda prob you have before doing a repair. Find another mehcanic this one sounds like a basard
I've seen other posts on here where people have had to replace multiple coils. I have a friend with a 99GXE who was also told he needed to replace all six. He was quoted about the same price. I had him order them from Courtesy Nissan (about $60 each) and we put them in. You can do it yourself in about 30 minutes to an hour. Do not pay $1100 to have this done.
Are you checking CEL or performance problems (I'm assuming yes, but want to make sure)? Another idea is to buy 1 coil and swap it in one at a time to see if the problem goes away. (In other words, it may only be one coil, not all six)
Let me know if you need any help with this,
Eric 99SE

I believe the Haynes manual has a procedure for testing coils. This might be easier than replacing one at a time. And more cost effective as well, since the front bank coils are a slightly different design than the rear bank ones and you'll have to buy one of each.
Btw, does anyone know who has the best prices on these ignition coils (if anyone's been shopping around...)?

I got a CEL a few months ago driving home from work (only like 30K on my '99 SE)... took it to the dealer and later on they called me and said "we found the problem, and went ahead and replaced all 6 ignition coils. Only 2 were bad, but we always replace all of them per Nissan".
"OK, so is it ready?".
"Yes sir, the total came to $960 (or something like that)".
My ***** dropped. So as I'm scrambling to gather my *********, the guy goes: "yeah, it's all covered under warranty, no charge to you."
Man that was friggin cruel.
